Fennel is a Pokémon researcher who appears as a supporting character in Pokémon: Black and White Versions. Her research specializes in the dreams of Pokémon.

Background

Fennel went to college with future professors Juniper and Burnet, and she formed strong bonds with both of them. Fennel eventually gained a lab in a building at Striation City, and she shared the space with Amanita, who maintained of Unova's PC boxes. Fennel studied Pokémon trainers themselves and also focused on the dreams of Pokémon. She sought dream mist from the Munna and Musharna nearby for use in establishing a connection to the Pokémon Dream World.

In Black and White, she met Hilbert/Hilda shortly after they arrived at Stiraton City and gave them HM 01: Cut. She tasked the trainers with collecting some dream mist for her from the Dreamyard. After Hilbert/Hilda gave her some dream mist, she promptly gave them a C-Gear, so that they could explore their Pokémon's dreams using the Game Sync feature. Fennel also later gave Bianca a Dowsing Machine as well as one to pass on to Hilbert/Hilda. Fennel also hosted a tutorial for the Pokémon Dream World.

Fennel reappeared in Black 2 and White 2. She and Amanita had moved to Castelia City during the two year period. Her only role in the game was to explain the Game Sync feature to Nate/Rosa.

• She was featured in an episode of the Pokémon anime. In her past, she worked at a research facility at the Dreamyard researching dream mist as a clean energy source, until a problem with a corrupted Musharna led to the place exploding. She then worked independently. Within the episode, she and her Munna, with the help of Ash and his friends, tracked down with missing Musharna, which wound up being captured by Team Rocket. They were able to free the Musharna, and Fennel was finally reunited with it. She later reappeared in another episode, where she worked with Professor Juniper in reviving an Archen.
• In the Pokémon Adventures manga, she appeared in the Black/White and Black 2/White 2 arcs. In the first arc, she helped Black to find his Munna after it was taken away and took some of its Dream Mist as payment. During the second arc, she had discovered the Pokémon Dream World and shared news of its existence with the others, which ended up being instrumental towards saving Black after he was trapped within the Light Stone.

Trivia

• Fennel's namesake is a plant species. Her Japanese name is Makomo, from the Japanese word for Manchurian wild rice.
• Her hair clip seems to be designed to match Munna's floral pattern.
• In Pokémon X and Y, she is mentioned by an NPC at Coumarine City, who refers to her as Dr. Fennel and talks about her development of Game Sync.
• She is mentioned in Pokémon Dream Radar by Professor Burnet, in which she talks about their past and shared interest in studying dreams.
• She is indirectly alluded to in Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire, when a Devon scientist claims that he is working on technology that can visually reproduce the dreams of Pokémon and that he has a rival in a faraway land who is doing the same research.
