Empoleon is a powerful and proud horned penguin-like Pokémon that was introduced in the fourth generation games. It is the third and final form in Piplup's evolutionary line.

Information[edit]

Empoleon evolves from Prinplup at Level 36. It has three horns extending from its beak which attest its power. The leader always has the biggest horns. Empoleon is a very proud Pokémon that avoids unnecessary disputes, but it will slash anything that hurts its pride with its wings, the edges of which are sharp enough to cleave through ice floes. Empoleon is also capable of swimming as fast as a jet boat.

Appearances[edit]

Mainstream Games[edit]

Empoleon has not been found in the wild and can only be obtained by evolving a Prinplup.

Other Games[edit]

In Pokémon Mystery Dungeon: Explorers of Time and Darkness, Empoleon could be recruited at Crevice Cave, Lower Crevice Cave and Mt. Avalanche. In Pokémon Ranger: Shadows of Almia, it was found at the Ice Lake. In Pokémon Ranger: Guardian Signs, it appeared at Mt. Sorbet and the Ice Temple. In Pokémon Rumble, it was found at Bright Beach. Empoleon also appeared in PokéPark Wii: Pikachu's Adventure at the Iceberg Zone, and it acted as the Zone Keeper for that zone as well as the Beach Zone.

Other Appearances[edit]

Other Media[edit]

  • In the Pokémon anime, Empoleon initially was shown about halfway through the Sinnoh series as Barry's main Pokémon during his first appearance. It evolved from the Piplup he received as his starter Pokémon. He used it throughout his appearances until losing to Paul at the Lily of the Valley Conference. Kenny's Prinplup also evolved into an Empoleon prior to his competing in the Grand Festival, although it did not make it past the appeal round due to accidentally knocking out the other competitor. It seemed to develop a rivalry with Ash's Buizel after battling it.
  • In the Pokémon Adventures manga, Platina's Prinplup evolved into an Empoleon while fighting members of Team Galactic at the Veilstone Department Store. It proved to be useful in most of Platina's following gym battles, and it remained as one of her main Pokémon.

Trivia[edit]

  • Its name is a combination of "emperor" (which in addition to playing on the creature's regal nature, is a reference to the emperor penguin) with "Napoleon" (the historical conqueror, likely due to the evolutionary line's pompous nature). Empoleon's height is also around the same as Napoleon's was believed to be, which is likely intended as an injoke.
