Darbus is the patriarch of the Goron tribe from The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess who is also temporarily turned into the boss Fyrus.

Background[edit]

Darbus was a a large and boisterous Goron who became the patriarch of Death Mountain's Goron tribe after Gor Coron stepped down to join the council of elders. He was known for his great pride, which caused him to become particularly ignorant about humans, but he still had a strong sense of moral duty. Darbus led the Goron Elders in investigating the Fire Temple due to strange occurrences. They checked on the Fused Shadow which had been entrusted to them by the spirits, but when Darbus touched it, he was possessed and transformed into the grotesque monster known as Fyrus. The Goron Elders had no choice but to seal him within an area of the temple to prevent him form wreaking havoc.

The hero Link eventually found Fyrus and defeated him in battle. This caused the Fused Shadow to separate from Darbus and returned him to his normal state. He was soon returned to the Goron tribe, but he had lost all his memory of the time that he was possessed. Gor Coron decided not to tell him what had happened, since he knew that Darbus would not like to know that he had been rescued by a human. Darbus had no idea who Link was upon their further encounters and actually teased him for humans' helplessness compared to Gorons. Darbus later helped Link by breaking through the rockslide which blocked the path to the Hidden Village, and he briefed Link about the enemies he would find there.

Trivia[edit]

  • The first part of his name is taken from Darunia, his well-known predecessor and possible ancestor from Ocarina of Time (as well as Darmani from Majora's Mask), and the latter part of his name comes from the word "boss", which is clearer when looking at his name Japanese. As for the name "Fyrus", it seems to be just a combination of a play on "fire" with Darbus's name.
  • In Breath of the Wild, one of the lava lakes on Death Mountain is named Darb Pond in reference to him.
  • A sticker of Darbus appears in Super Smash Bros. Brawl.
  • In Hyrule Warriors, one of Darunia's alternate costumes is based on Darbus's design, known as "Standard Outfit (Twilight)".
