Main Characters[edit]

Minor Characters[edit]

  • Aginah - Aginah is an elderly man living in a cave at the Desert of Mystery. He tells Link part of the prophecy of the Great Cataclysm and specifically lets him know about the Book of Mudora.
  • Blind - Blind was a thief who used to operate in Hyrule and hated the light. He was based in Kakariko Village, but he eventually went to the Dark World in search of power, where he became a monster and one of Ganon's lieutenants. He disguised himself as one of the maidens to fool Link, but after his diguise was undone by a sudden burst of sunlight, he revealed his true self and was destroyed in battle with Link.
  • The Bully - He appears on Death Mountain. He was among those who came into the Dark World and was transformed to reflect his heart's desire. This caused him to become a devil-like person. He is accompanied by a blob-like boy who had become such due to his indecisiveness. The bully kicks around the other guy for fun. They are the first characters Link encounters in the Dark World and give him an idea of the laws governing this world. At the end of the game, they are restored to the light world and their true forms.
  • Bug-Catching Kid - He is a friend of Link's who lives in Kakariko Village. The evil air which is emanating from around Hyrule has made him ill. He usually loves catching bugs, but as he is too sick, he entrusts his bug-catching net to Link instead. He makes a full recovery by the ending.
  • The Bumpkins - A set of lumberjack triplets named A. B. and Q. Bumpkin who live near the Lost Woods. A. and B. are concerned about the fog in the Lost Woods and thank Link when it is cleared. The lumberjacks initially cut through a strange tree near their home, and after it is cut it reveals a tunnel that Link can enter. Q. Bumpking only appears in the GBA remake, where he sends Link on a quest to solve his riddles and bring him certain objects or creatures if the player has gotten ten medals in Four Swords. If Link completes this task, Q. teaches Link the Hurriane Spin technique.
  • Dwarven Swordsmiths - They are a pair of swordsmiths who live in a hut near Kakariko Village. However, one of them went missing in the Dark World and became a frog-like man. Link can lead him back to the Light World, and once the swordsmiths are reunited, they thank Link by tempering his Master Sword into a Tempered Sword for him at a huge discount of only 10 Rupees.
  • Kiki - Kiki is a monkey who appears near the Palace of Darkness in the Dark World and is greedy for Rupees. He charges Link ten Rupees to let him temporarily accompany him and then 100 Rupees to open the path to the Palace of Darkness, as only he could reach the switch.
  • The King - The King of Hyrule and Princess Zelda's father. He was deceived by Aganhim, who posed as a benevolent force to infiltrate the government. Aganhim later got rid of the king in some unknown manner and took control of the kingdom in his stead. The intro shows a figure on the throne that could be the dead king or simply a depiction of Aganhim. Regardless of what had happened to him, the king was restored at the end following Link's wish on the Triforce.
  • Mad Batter - He is an eccentric demonic creature living in a well near Kakariko Village. Link apparently awakens him from his slumber, and after thanking Link he decides to pay him back with a curse. He claims to be reducing Link's magic by half, but his magic meter is actually doubled.
  • Middle-Aged Guy - He is a former thief (possibly from Blind's group) and a professional lockpick who lives near the Desert of Mystery. He pretends to be an average middle-aged guy who is mute in order to hide from his past. He only talks to Link after he finds out the truth about him. The middle-aged guy offers to open a chest for him in exchange for his secrecy.
  • Ocarina Boy - Known as the flute boy in the American translation. This is a young boy who left home in search of the Triforce. He owned the ocarina and would play it to attract many animals in a small grove. Whenever Link entered the grove, he could see the boy playing the ocarina and phasing away from the light world. It is uncertain if this is a repeating after-image of some sort or simply the game looping his teleportation. In the Dark World, he was turned into a tree-like form and could not move. He gives Link his shovel and asks him to find his ocarina for him. Link finds it, but the boy cannot play it anymore and asks Link to play the song for him one last time. Link does so, at which point his body hardens and he apparently dies. The boy was restored to normal in the game's ending.
  • The Lost Old Man - This elderly man lives on Death Mountain and is escorted by Link to his home in a cave there. He tells Link much about the Dark World and gives him the Magic Mirror. Aginah also tells Link some details about the Moon Pearl after he finds it. Additionally, his granddaughter was among the maiden descendants of the seven sages who were kidnapped by Aganhim. It is uncertain if he himself is descended from the sages as well, as he does not state it and it is possible that another of the girl's grandparents was the one from the sages' bloodline.
  • Loyal Priest (Sage) - This priest (referred to as a "sage" in the translation) inhabits the sanctuary which is connected to Hyrule Castle through a hidden path. He keeps Zelda safe there after Link brings her there through the secret tunnel, and he also gives Link some preliminary information on the Master Sword. The priest is killed by Agahnim's men when they raid the sanctuary and kidnap Princess Zelda, but he is later restored by Link's wish during the ending.
  • Running Man - Not to be confused with the Running Man from Ocarina of Time. This man is an inhabitant of Kakariko Village who is afraid of Link due to believing Aganhim's propaganda about him. He will sprint from Link on sight, and Link can only catch him using the Pegasus Boots. He will then begin to consider that Link might not really be a bad guy and advises him to try running into trees.
  • Sahasrahla - A descendant of the sages who lived near the Eastern Temple and offered Link advice throughout the game.
  • Link's Uncle - The man who lived with Link. He was fatally struck during his attempt to save Princess Zelda, but he was able to pass on his weapons as well as the mission to Link. He was restored to life in the ending.
  • Venus - She is referred to as the Queen of the Fairies. She lives in the Fountain of Happiness in the Wishing Well and upgrades most of Link's items. However, the ultimate upgrades (the Golden Sword and Silver Arrow) are only given by the cursed Great Fairy at the Pyramid of Power.
  • King Zora - The ruler of the Zoras who is found near Zora's Waterfall. He gives Link Zora's Flippers for 300 Rupees and tells him about the warping whirlpools.
