Debut Mother 3

Lucas is a young boy who acts as the protagonist of Mother 3. He lives with his family on the outskirts of Tazmily Village on the Nowhere Islands at the onset of the game. He is initially weaker than his twin, Claus, and is described as a crybaby at times.

Background[edit]

The Timid Twin[edit]

Lucas lived a happy life until one night. While he, Claus, and his mother were visiting his grandfather, the forest between them and Tazmily village caught fire as a result of an attack by the Pig Mask Army. While trying to make their way back to Tazmily, Drago, a dinosaur Lucas played with who had been captured and turned into a robot, killed his mother. The twins escaped via a river and washed up in Tazmily not long after. The next day Claus went to kill Drago and left Lucas behind. Lucas took to crying at his mother's grave almost nonstop. At his mother's funeral, Lucas told everyone where Claus had gone. Scolded for not trying to stop his twin, he ran from the funeral. Claus was never found again, though Lucas's father began searching for him daily, leaving Lucas to care for himself.

Upon the arrival of Yokuba, a member of the Pig Mask Army, in Tazmily, everyone in the village were given Happy Boxes (televisions); bad things happened to those who didn't accept one. Lucas did refuse, however, and drove Yokuba out with the help of a different Drago in order to save Wes, an elder resident of Tazmily, Kumatora, the princess of Osohe Castle, and Salsa, Yokuba's monkey slave. Yokuba returned shortly after and kept the village under his control, though now with a considerable grudge against Lucas.

Three Years Past[edit]

Three years later, a rumor went around that a member of the band DCMC was really Duster, Wes's son and a thief who had come from Tazmily. While investigating, Lucas picked up his first PSI abilities (including PK Love) from the Magypsy Ionia. He and his dog Boney met Kumatora once again; she was posing as the waitress Yoshi-Koshi in Club TitiBoo while also searching for Duster. She explained that the thief had amnesia and told Lucas about an egg that contained the world's secrets, which she and Duster had taken from Osohe Castle three years ago. It and Duster had gone missing while they escaped the Pig Mask Army invading the area. The three located Duster at the club and convinced him to join them, then set out to the Unknown Valley to find the egg.

Within the Unknown Valley, Lucas and co. discovered the egg within a Clay Guy. Before they could grab it the creature was brought to life by a bolt of lightning. They chased it to a factory full of Clay Guys built by the Pig Mask Army, masqueraded as members of the army, and eventually caught up to the Clay Guy with the egg in a dump. After taking the egg, the group was caught up by the Pig Mask Army, who had assumed that Lucas was their commander because of the uniform he stole earlier. They took the group to the Lightning Tower; Yokuba was also there at the time and identified Lucas. He chased the group to the top of the tower (along the way Lucas is struck by lightning and learns PK Flash), then threatened to blow them up along with it in his escape. However, Yokuba slipped and fell from the tower, freeing the group to hitch a ride with the Pig Mother Ship that had come to rescue him. While using Duster's Rope Snake to cling to a ladder on the ship, Lucas and co. spotted the Masked Man within the vessel before the Rope Snake's jaws gave out and they all fell.

Lucas awoke alone in a field of sunflowers, though Boney was waiting nearby for him. Otherwise alone, he spotted a vision of his mother and he and Boney chased after her. He followed her right off a cliff, but fell into a haystack at the bottom.

The Seven Needles[edit]

When Lucas came to from this fall, he found himself back with his grandfather and Wes. They set him out to seek assistance from Ionia, who Lucas found tied up nearby by mysterious attackers. Ionia joined Lucas as they made their way to the house of another Magypsy, Aolia. Shortly after finding him, Aolia began to fade from existence, but opened a passage to Osohe Castle in his last moments. On the way to the castle, Ionia explained to Lucas that the Nowhere Islands coexisted with an omnipotent dragon. Because of the dragon's power, seven needles had been forged by the seven Magypsies that would put the dragon into an eternal sleep so long as the needles were not pulled from their resting places. Only two people could draw the needles and cause the Magypsies to disappear, one with a heart of darkness and one with a heart of light. Since Lucas had learned PK Love, he was one of the two.

Lucas made his way back to Tazmily village and received his father's Badge of Courage as a memento. He was led to the Pig Mask Army's Chimera Lab, where he donned a disguise and was ordered to chase down Salsa. Along the way he ran into Dr. Andonuts and the invincible Ultimate Chimera, but Salsa saved him. The monkey took him and Boney to the third Magypsy, Doria, and Kumatora. With Dr. Andonuts's help, Lucas and co. found Doria's needle at the bottom of a pond and pulled it. They parted with Salsa and found another Magypsy, Lydia, within the mountains. Before they could find his needle, the Masked Man arrived and pulled it. They were then led to Saturn Valley via bottled messages and saved the Mr. Saturns within from a Pig Mask invasion. Here they rejoined Duster and the Rope Snake and found the next needle in a lava-filled cave. Yokuba, now mute and speaking via a translator, attacked, but was defeated once more. The needle's guardian, Fligia, appeared after it was removed and directed Lucas and co. to the rest of the needles.

The group ran into a snag when a Pig Mask destroyed the only tunnel out of Saturn Valley. After collecting several birds on advice from the Mr. Saturns, they gathered them all in a cage and planned to ride it away. The Snake Rope volunteered to carry them, but dropped them again at the beach near Tazmily; he left the group in disgrace. Lucas and co. attempted to cross the sea to a southern island by using the Pig Mask Army's Merman Machines to breathe underwater. When they washed up on the island, they were starved and had lost all their possessions. To regain their strength, they ate Energy Mushrooms that caused them to enter a hallucinogenic state where people from their past appeared to torment them. Lucas in particular was attacked by visions of his father and Claus. Eventually they arrived at the house of Mixolydia, a Magypsy who cured them of the mushrooms' effects and returned their items. They went to remove the next needle, but the Masked Man arrived and took it first. After the group recovered, they headed to the temple where Ionia's needle rested; along the way a Mr. Saturn gave Lucas a polished Badge of Courage (actually the Franklin Badge). The Masked Man met the group at the temple, but they were defended from his attacks by the Franklin Badge and chased him away instead.

King P[edit]

After drawing the sixth needle, a Pig Mask arrived and offered to take the group to meet King Pokey at New Pork City. There they learned that everyone from Tazmily village had moved in and of the exploits of Ness and co. in EarthBound. Boney was separated from the group; they followed him until they met Leder, a resident of Tazmily who gave them the true story of the Nowhere Islands: the world was destroyed not long ago by the misguided efforts of humanity, and only a small portion of people were able to survive by sailing to the Nowhere Islands. The islands were not destroyed because they rested on the back of the sleeping dragon itself. To remove the terror from their hearts, those who went to the Nowhere Islands had their memories erased (except for Leder) and stored within the egg that had been taken from Osohe Castle. After this Pokey had arrived and started the Pig Mask Army, turning the last Magypsy, Locria, against the others. Upon leaving, Lucas and co. were attacked by Yokuba once more and learned that he was Locria before killing him.

The group made their way up the Empire Pokey Building with the help of DCMC and encountered Pokey on the true 100th floor. Flint, Wes, and Dr. Andonuts arrived to help, but Pokey ran for the needle after describing his plan to awaken the dragon and destroy the islands. As Lucas and co. chased after, Flint pulled Lucas aside and revealed to him that the Masked Man was actually Claus. The group caught up to Pokey and battled him, but Pokey reacted by sealing himself in Dr. Andonuts's Absolutely Safe Machine, which in fact kept the rest of the world safe from him by preventing his escape. They continued to the needle and found the Masked Man, who knocked everyone down save Lucas. Lucas was unable to attack his own brother, while Flint defended him from Claus's PK Love attacks and Hinawa called to the boys from beyond the grave. Hinawa managed to reach what was left of Claus's mind; the boy responded by reflecting lightning off the Franklin Badge to kill himself, then thanked Lucas for being with him as he died. With no more obstacles, Flint ordered Lucas to draw the final needle and awaken the dragon. The world seemed to end at this point, but everyone had in fact survived and thank the player from the "End?" screen.

Abilities[edit]

Lucas usually fights with sticks, though he can use yo-yos and bats along with the rest of the party. He is one of two PSI users in Mother 3, with his abilities focusing on healing, defense, and other status effects. His only damage-causing ability is akin to Ness's PSI Rockin' in appearance and in that the name is determined by the player: the default name, however, is PK Love.

Of note is that at almost any time while Lucas is playable as the main character, Boney is also in the party.

Other Appearances[edit]

Video Games[edit]

  • In Super Mario Maker, Lucas appeared as a costume that Mario could transform into when using the Mystery Mushroom power-up. His costume could be unlocked by scanning an amiibo of Lucas, or by completing a 100 Mario Challenge on Expert or harder.
  • In Poochy & Yoshi's Woolly World, a pattern for Yoshi based on Lucas's appearance could be unlocked by scanning an amiibo of Lucas.

Super Smash Bros.[edit]

Lucas appears as a playable fighter in several Super Smash Bros. games, appearing in in Super Smash Bros. Brawl, Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS/Wii U (as a DLC character made available in June 2015) and Super Smash Bros. Ultimate. He is partially a clone of Ness with moves similar to his PSI Magnet and PK Thunder, although the former is held in front of Lucas instead of around him, and the latter appears as a blue spark instead of green. He also uses the Rope Snake as a weapon, despite it being primarily Duster's tool, and his special moves are all abilities originally used by Kumatora. His Final Smash is PK Starstorm, and he is joined by Kumatora and Boney for the attack in Ultimate.

In Ultimate, he could be unlocked through the game's variable-based system for unlocking characters or by awakening him in Adventure Mode (where he was found at the western village area). His Classic Mode route was called "Magic, Sacred Powers and PSI!"; as its name suggested, it was themed around pitting Lucas against opponents wielding such powers. The boss of his route was Master Hand (accompanied by Crazy Hand on higher difficulties).

Trophies/Stickers/Spirits[edit]

Lucas has also been represented by two trophies (one being of his Final Smash) and a sticker (using his Mother 3 sprite) in Brawl, a trophy in the 3DS/Wii U installment plus two extra trophies (and one of his Final Smash in the Wii U version) that come with Lucas's DLC, and a Fighter Spirit in Ultimate.

Brawl: The Subspace Emissary[edit]

In "The Subspace Emissary", Lucas was first seen wandering the Ruined Zoo in fright, when he was chased by a giant statue of Pokey. However, the statue was then shattered by a PK Thunder launched by Ness, revealing the real Pokey inside within his machine from Mother 3. The two PSI kids worked together to defeat Pokey, but afterwards they were assailed by Wario with a Trophy Gun. Wario tried to capture Ness, but when Ness kept dodging, he instead aimed at Lucas. Ness pushed Lucas out of the beam's path and in the process was hit and captured. Lucas then fled and met with Red, teaming up with him to find his missing Ivysaur and Charizard while hoping to find a way to save Ness.

Eventually they battled Wario and defeated him, but Lucas found no sign of Ness anywhere nearby. As they wandered the ruins, they were then attacked by the robotic Galleom. After the Galleom was defeated, it grabbed both Lucas and Red then rocketed off into the stratosphere while activating a Subspace Bomb planted in its forehead. Lucas than proved himself by chopping the Galleom's arm off with PK Lightning to make it drop both of them before the Subspace Bomb detonated. They were then saved from the long drop by Meta Knight, who caught them and brought them to Ike and Marth. They remained there until all of the heroes united to enter Subspace.

Trivia[edit]

  • Lucas and Claus are named after characters from Agota Kristof's novel The Notebook, which was about a bond between twins and was an influence on the story of Mother 3.
