Little Mac is a boxer who is featured as the main character of the Punch-Out!! series.
Background[edit]
Punch-Out!![edit]
Little Mac was originally from Bronx, New York. He loved tough challenges. At 17 years old, he met retired heavyweight champion Doc Louis by chance. Doc became Little Mac's trainer and taught him everything he knew about boxing until Mac was ready to enter the World Video Boxing Association, Little Mac started competing in the Minor Circuit but climbed the ranks until becoming world champion and winning a Dream Match with Mike Tyson (in the original version) or Mr. Dream (in the second version).
Super Punch-Out!![edit]
Super Punch-Out!! followed a blonde boxer entering the Nintendo Boxing Association. This boxer entered the Nintendo Boxing Association and, much as in the NES game, ascended through the ranks to becomes champion after defeating Nick Bruiser. It is uncertain if this character is Little Mac, although supporting evidence includes Fight Night Round 2, the information for the Virtual Console version of Super Punch-Out!!, and the official Punch-Out!! website detailing the NES and SNES history of the series.
Punch Out!! (Wii)[edit]
Little Mac appeared again in the Wii's Punch Out!!. Like in the NES game, he started against Glass Joe in the Minor Circuit, then he worked his way up to defeat Mr. Sandman for the World Championship. After his victory against Mr. Sandman, he challenged Donkey Kong in the Last Stand for absolute victory in the ring.
He was also featured in Doc Louis's Punch-Out!!, where he battled his mentor.
Abilities[edit]
Little Mac is a skilled boxer. At 107 lbs, he's a light-weight compared to most of the other boxers. He uses superior skill and speed to take his opponents down. His specialty is an upper cut called the "Knockout Punch".
In the Wii game, Little Mac can additionally transform into Giga Mac during multiplayer mode once a blue bar is filled up by constantly punching the opponent. Giga Mac opposes Little Mac by being slow and monstrous, and very powerful. He has a wider variety of moves as well such as a wind-up punch and a double-handed overhead strike.
In Super Smash Bros., he has the following moveset:
- Standard Special Move: Straight Lunge - This is a chargeable punch attack. With it, Mac can charge forward across most of the stage and punch everyone he makes contact with. When his power meter is full, he will instead perform a KO Uppercut that can act as a one-hit KO.
- Side Special Move: Jolt Haymaker - With this move, Little Mac hops forward and performs a downward punch. When used on the ground, this move can be used to avoid projectiles.
- Up Special Move: Rising Uppercut - Little Mac spins around and propels himself into the air, ultimately performing an uppercut.
- Down Special Move: Slip Counter - This move has Little Mac moving backwards to avoid attacks. Mimicking the gameplay of the Punch-Out!! games, if someone attempts to attack him when he is performing this move, a representation of a heartbeat will appear and Little Mac will automatically counter-punch the would-be attacker.
- Final Smash: Giga Mac - This Final Smash can be used when a Smash Ball is activated. It turns Little Mac temporarily into Giga Mac, which makes him a lot stronger while restricting his mobility.
Other Appearances[edit]
Video Games[edit]
- Little Mac appeared as an unlockable character in Fight Night: Round 2 for the Gamecube. This version used the appearance of the Super Punch-Out!! boxer with Little Mac's name, which has supported theories that they are the same person.
- Little Mac appears in Captain Rainbow as an inhabitant of Mimin Island. He is shown to have become overly obese over the years and came to the island in hopes of finding a way to become champ again. Nick can compete against him in boxing minigames and help him with dietary training to make Mac lose weight, although it is possible for him to lose too much weight and become dangerously thin. Successful training will make Little Mac resemble his original appearance.
- In Yoshi's Woolly World, a Yoshi design based on Little Mac's appearance could be unlocked by scanning an amiibo of Little Mac.
- In Super Mario Maker, Little Mac appeared as one of the Mystery Mushroom costumes that Mario could transform into. His costume could be unlocked by scanning his amiibo or as a random prize for completing a 100 Mario Challenge on Expert or harder.
- Little Mac was seen pictured on a movie poster in the Paranormal Productions level of Luigi's Mansion 3, with Doc Louis and Mr. Sandman in the background. The poster specifically referenced the Wii version, as an homage to the developer's previous work. The poster could be pulled down to reveal a green boxing glove, the same color as Mac's.
Super Smash Bros.[edit]
In the Super Smash Bros. series, Little Mac initially appeared as an Assist Trophy in Super Smash Bros. Brawl and became a playable character from Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS/Wii U onwards. As an Assist Trophy in Brawl, he attacked opponents with punches and the occasional uppercut.
As a playable character, he comes with a special power meter that, when filled, can temporarily allow Little Mac to deliver a one-hit KO uppercut. His alternate costumes also include a set where Little Mac does not speak and is composed of wireframes, in reference to the arcade version of the protagonist. The Giga Mac transformation is also present as his Final Smash. Although he was part of the starting roster in his initial playable appearance, in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, he had to be unlocked through the game's variable-based system for unlocking characters or by awakening him in Adventure Mode (where he is found by the city area).
Little Mac's personal Classic Mode route in Ultimate is called "Friendly Sparring". It is themed around pitting Mac against other close-range martial artists, with the last enemy before the boss fight being Donkey Kong, in reference to his role in the Wii installment of Punch-Out!!.
His appearances are accompanied by a trophy in Brawl and two trophies in the 3DS/Wii U game. The Wii U installment also has trophies for trophies for Giga Mac and his overweight Captain Rainbow appearance. In Ultimate, he has a Fighter Spirit that is unlocked by completing Classic Mode while playing as him, and there is also a Legend-rank Primary Spirit of Giga Mac.
Other Media[edit]
- Little Mac makes a cameo appearance in the opening of the Captain N comic, where he is seen punching out Glass Joe. This is the only reference to Mac found in Captain N-related media, despite King Hippo appearing in both the animated series and the comics.
- Little Mac was featured in several Punch-Out!! comics that were made for the Nintendo Comics System. The first strip, "The First Fight", depicts his first meeting with Doc Louis which leads to his victory over Glass Joe.
Trivia[edit]
- It's debatable whether the hero of Super Punch-Out!! is Little Mac. His hair and eye color are different. Additionally, the trophies from Super Smash Bros. only acknowledge the NES and Wii games as Little Mac's appearances.
