Super Mario Maker 2 is a 2-D platforming level creation game and a sequel to the original Super Mario Maker that was released for the Nintendo Switch in 2019.

Gameplay

Like the first game, Super Mario Maker 2 is a game that is focused around creating, sharing and playing customized levels based on several 2-D platforming games of the Super Mario series. The three different game styles from the previous game return (Super Mario Bros., Super Mario Bros. 3 and New Super Mario Bros.) and a new style is added, based on New Super Mario 3D World reinterpreted in 2-D. The game also adds more power-ups and enemies, as well as new options for level creation, such as the inclusion of slopes.

This game includes a Story Mode, a single player campaign in which Mario can take on tasks (in the form of challenging levels created by Nintendo) in order to earn coins to help rebuild Princess Peach's Castle. There is also the standard Course Maker and a Course World for completing further courses. As with the previous game, it is possible to upload levels over the internet for others to play, and to download others' courses. There is also co-op multiplayer, which is available for up to four players both locally and online. With multiplayer games, additional players can play as Luigi, Toad or Toadette. The game's online features also require a Nintendo Switch Online subscription.

In December 2019, a free update was released which made the Master Sword available as a power-up. This power-up allows the player to transform into Link from The Legend of Zelda and perform actions based on some of his weapons from the series.

Legacy

The game was generally well-received and went on to be one of the best-selling games on the Switch.
