Super Mario Galaxy 2 is a 3-D Super Mario adventure game released for the Wii in 2010. It acts as a sequel to Super Mario Galaxy.

Story[edit]

While on his way to see the Star Festival with Princess Peach at the Mushroom Kingdom, Mario meets a young Luma that enters his hat and gives him new spin powers. However, Bowser then attacks in the form of a giant that he obtained using the power of the stars, once more absconding with Peach into outer space. Mario sets off in pursuit and winds up traveling across the universe on the Starship Mario, which is actually a small planetoid which a Luma named Lubba alters to resemble Mario's head.

Gameplay[edit]

The gameplay builds upon the gameplay from the previous game in that Mario is controlled in his journeys across various planetoids. This game's new hub world is the Starship Mario, which travels throughout the map of the seven "worlds" which each contain various galaxies, which hearkens back to the maps of classic Mario games. The galaxies also usually have less stars, although as the player collects Comet Medals, they can make Prankster Comets appear for each individual galaxy.

Some of the power-ups that had been used in the first Super Mario Galaxy return, and new gameplay additions include Yoshi, a Spin Drill item and two new Mario forms. Yoshi can use his tongue to swing, and different fruits can give him different powers such as inflation and a speed boost. Luigi can also be unlocked as an optional character who can be used instead of Mario. The game features higher difficulty, but this is balanced by the inclusion of the Rosalina-like Cosmic Guide, which is this game's version of the Super Guide tutorial that was originally used for New Super Mario Bros. Wii.

Legacy[edit]

Sequels[edit]

The next Mario adventure game was Super Mario 3D Land for the Nintendo 3DS, which mixed some of the gameplay of Super Mario Galaxy with elements of classic Mario games and was produced by the same team. The next mainstream 3-D Mario adventures on consoles would end up being 2013's Super Mario 3D World and 2017's Super Mario Odyssey.
