Riolu is small, bipedal fox-like Pokémon that was introduced in the fourth generation games. Its evolved form is Lucario.

Information[edit]

Riolu has a body that is lithe yet powerful. It is apparently capable of cresting three mountains and crossing two canyons in one night. Riolu communicate using their auras and can see emotions such as joy or sorrow in the form of waves due to their unique abilities. Riolu will also intensify their auras to alert others when they are afraid or sad.

Riolu evolves into Lucario when it levels up with a high amount of happiness during the daytime. Although Lucario is the only one that can normally learn Aura Sphere, it is possible to obtain a Riolu knowing Aura Sphere through special means.

Appearances[edit]

Mainstream Games[edit]

In Pokémon: Diamond, Pearl and Platinum Versions, the player is given a Riolu egg by Riley at Iron Island. In HeartGold and SoulSilver, it could appear at the Safari Zone's Meadow area if enough Rock and Forest objects were present. In Black and White, they rarely appeared at Challenger's Cave.

Other Games[edit]

In Pokémon Mystery Dungeon: Explorers of Time, Riolu could be recruited at the fourth through eighth floors of Crystal Cave, while in Explorers of Darkness it had to be unlocked through a Wonder Mail mission in which one had to be rescued from Crystal Cave's sixth floor. Riolu was also available as a starter Pokémon in Pokémon Mystery Dungeon: Explorers of Sky. In Pokémon Ranger: Shadows of Almia, normal Rilous were found at Almia Castle There is also a Ranger Net Mission in which Kyle's Riolu, which knows Aura Sphere, is stolen by Team Dim Sun and the player has to retrieve it. This Aura Sphere Riolu could later be transferred to Diamond/Pearl.

In Pokémon Ranger: Guardian Signs, it appeared at Oblivia Ruins and the Thunder Temple. In Pokémon Rumble, it was found at the Windy Prairie. Riolu also appeared in PokéPark Wii: Pikachu's Adventure at the Haunted Zone as well as at the Meeting Place.

Other Appearances[edit]

In Other Media[edit]

  • In the Pokémon anime, a Riolu was prominently featured in a two-part Sinnoh episode. It was an unusually powerful Riolu that had learned Aura Sphere and because of this was targeted by Pokémon Hunter J. Ash and some Pokémon Rangers helped to save the Riolu, and it bonded with Ash in the process. In the end, it returned to the home that it protected, which was known as the "Lucario Kingdom".
  • In the Pokémon Adventures manga, Riolu made appearances starting in the Diamond/Pearl arc. A Riolu was featured as one of Maylene's Pokémon, and one chapter also had Diamond and Riley protected a Riolu egg from enemy trainers who were hired by Team Galactic. The Riolu seemed to stick with Riley after hatching, unlike in the games, and the Riolu was implied to be the offspring of Riley's Lucario.
