Punchinello is the third Star Piece-guarding boss in Super Mario RPG. He is weird, enigmatic, hot-headed and tragic all in one. His actions are driven by a desire to be famous.
Background
Punchinello is found deep in the heart of the Moleville Mines, where he tosses Bob-ombs about randomly in his search for fame. His reasons are unspecified, but he is likely searching for some sort of treasure, possibly even hearing about the Star Piece which was located very close to him. Mario, Mallow and Geno are forced to battle him when they try to pass him by in search of several missing mole-children.
Punchinello battled the three with a wide variety of Bob-ombs, however his fatal error came when he attempted to summon the King Bomb. The gigantic bomb landed right on top of Punchinello and exploded seconds later, revealing a hidden Star Piece. As for Punchinello, he is presumed dead following the giant explosion, as he has not been heard from since.

Trivia
- Punchinello means "buffoon", and the word comes from a very buffoonish character in an old puppet show.
- Punchinello's Star Hill wish is "I wanna be famous!".
