Debut Fire Emblem: Ankoku Ryuu to Hikari no Tsurugi

Nyna is the princess (and later queen) of Archanea who appears as a supporting character in Fire Emblem: Ankoku Ryuu to Hikari no Tsurugi, Book One of Monshou no Nazo and Shadow Dragon, and as a playable unit in Book 2 of Monshou no Nazo as well as BS Fire Emblem: Akaneia Senki.

Background[edit]

BS Fire Emblem[edit]

Nyna was born into the Archanean royal family and bore the family's heirloom, the Fire Emblem. She was looked after throughout her life by her father the king and Bishop Boah. However, things changed when the War of Darkness broke out and Grustian soldiers working under the Dolhr Empire invaded the Millenial Palace. The king attempted to have Nyna escape, escorted by Boah and her other loyal companions Midia, Dolph, Macellan and Tomas. However, they were not able to escape and were cornered by General Camus. After Midia failed to fend him off, Nyna attempted to kill herself with her dropped dagger, but Camus was able to talk her out of it. He bluntly called her irresponsible and told her that her father (who had been killed by that time) had been irresponsible and that killing herself would be equally irresponsible. Rather, he told Nyna that if she did not allow Medeus to kill her and lived as long as she could, she could give hope to the people of Archanea. Nyna refused to forgive Camus, but accepted his reasoning and secretly began to feel smitten with him.

Over the next two years, Camus disobeyed his orders to execute Nyna and harbored her within the castle, where she was allowed to act freely. However, this was not without its share of trauma as her parents' corpses were put on display outside of castle. When Lena and Rickard's Thieves of Justice were caught by Camus in Part 3 of BS Fire Emblem, Nyna convinced him to let them go and even gave them some of her valuables. Although they lived mostly in peace, her time with Camus had to come to an end in Part 4 when Medeus discovered his treachery and dispatched a small army of elite Dolhr troops to apprehend Nyna as well as Camus and kill him if necessary. Camus and a few of his sables worked together in helping to escort Nyna to Aurelis, where she would be safe with Hardin. Nyna was heartbroken to be separated from Camus, who stayed behind to hold off the enemy, and she declared her love to him before they were separated. Hardin was safely able to retrieve her near the border, and she almost immediately collapsed into his arms while calling for Camus.

Book One[edit]

In Aurelis, Nyna was able to regain her composure and worked with Hardin, who was commanding one of the few remaining forces that stood against Dolhr. She sent out calls across the continent for others who were willing to stand against Dolhr, and eventually they received one from Marth, the exiled prince of Altea. Marth made his way to Aurelis and managed to fight off the invaders from Macedon who were working as part of the Dolhr Empire. When they met in Chapter 6 (5 SNES), Nyna was impressed enough with Marth that she granted him the Fire Emblem as her mark of approval for him as leader of their united army. Together, they were able to march to Archanea and reclaim the palace after Nyna put her fears behind her. She thanked Marth by giving him Parthia.

However, Nyna soon became anxious when it became apparent that they would soon have to face Camus and the Sable Order in combat. Her conflicted feelings came to the forefront when they battled Camus in Chapter 20 (16 SNES). Nyna attempted to talk Camus into standing down, but Camus refused due to his honor as a knight as well as the guilt he felt for having killed Marth's father, and he asked Nyna to find someone who would bring joy back into her life. He was seemingly killed, and Nyna broke down afterwards. She came to believe that this was due to the curse of the Fire Emblem, Artemis's Curse, which activated for her as she had passed the Fire Emblem onto Marth- the curse being that wielders of the Fire Emblem would lose their loved ones and that the end of war was the end of love.

Princess Nyna was able to remain strong for the final campaigns of the War of Darkness, and they were able to finally defeat Medeus. In the epilogue, it was Nyna who convinced Marth to admit his feelings for Caeda. Afterwards, Archanea needed a king, and Nyna had to choose between Marth and Hardin as her husband, due to the demands of society. Not wanting to ruin Marth and Caeda's relationship and being pressured into a quick marriage, she chose to marry Hardin, knowing that he had fallen in love with her but also knowing that she did not feel the same way for him.

Book Two[edit]

Over the next three years, Hardin and Nyna ruled Archanea happily until Hardin discovered Nyna's secret: that she did not truly love him. This caused him to sink into a depression, and when he returned he was under the influence of Gharnef to the point where he was like a different, altogether colder person who sought to subjigate the entire continent. Nyna became very sad and saw that the only other person who could take control of the kingdom, as well as the only person who could truly stop Hardin, was Marth. So she secretly sent Linde away to deliver the Fire Emblem to him as her sign to him that Hardin was no longer worthy of the throne. Nyna also sent a letter to King Aurelis secretly, convincing him to remain neutral in the conflict. However, Hardin eventually learned of her treachery and was infuriated, locking her away in her room.

Nyna was still able to communicate with Boah secretly, but Hardin eventually discovered this at a late point in the game and fatally wounded Boah while giving Nyna over to Gharnef for use as a sacrifice in Medeus's revival. In the final chapter, Nyna and the other captured maidens were under Gharnef's hypnotic control and forced into acting as Medeus's bodyguards in such a way that Marth and the others could not reach Medeus without going through one of them (and Medeus could also drain their health to replenish his own). However, Nyna's trance could be broken if Sirius (who was actually a disguised Camus) spoke to her. Open awakening, she at first felt guilty about the effect she had on Hardin, but Sirius comforted her by telling her that Marth had ended Hardin's suffering that he both loved her until the end and apologized for his crimes. Nyna recognized him as Camus and was astounded, although Sirius denied this and told her to calm down, saying that she should return to Marth's side, and that he had to return to his country where he had somebody (likely his fiancee Teela) waiting for him. Nyna understood and thanked him, and he silently apologized to her.

When the war ended, Nyna left Archanea in Marth's hands and vanished, likely in pursuit of Camus/Sirius. However, whatever happened afterwards involving her, Camus and Teela remains a mystery.

Other Appearances[edit]

Video Games[edit]

  • In Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, Nyna appeared as an Advanced-rank Support Spirit with the effect of reducing poison damage. If fought in a Spirit battle, Nyna's Spirit would possess Palutena and avoid conflict while being protected by Ganondorf. She would also heal herself periodically.
