Debut Donkey Kong

The older of two twin siblings, he is more forward and often is usually the first to approach things. Because of this, he is the more famous of the brothers and mixed into adventures more often. Famous for his jumping, though his brother is better at it. Brave and fearless, he rarely thinks twice about any adventure. Mario is acknowledged as a great warrior, defeating Jinx of Monstro Town, the Master of Toad Town, and winning the championship as the Great Gonzales in Glitzville.

Background

Early Years

His first adventure took place when he was rescued by a clan of yoshis, who set out to save his younger sibling. His first noble act was rescuing his girlfriend from the crazed ape, Donkey Kong. He keeps the kong imprisoned until DK Jr. busts the ape out. After that he switches to plumbing, a safer career. But in the sewers with his brother, the two end up battling strange creatures and ending up in the Mushroom Kingdom. In 'Super Mario Bros.' the two shortly meet Toad and go after Bowser, repeating the same adventure in 'Lost Levels'. In 'Super Mario Bros. 2' he saves SubCon, though passes it off as a dream. In 'Super Mario Bros. 3' Bowser takes over again and he teams up with Luigi once again. In 'Super Mario World', while the vacation with the princess, Bowser shows up and kidnaps Peach. The two, with their new ally Yoshi, take on Bowser again. After this point Mario starts going solo or going with other allies, such as going alone with Yoshi in 'Yoshi Safari', traveling with Bowser, Peach and two new friends in 'Super Mario RPG, his rematch with Bowser in 'Mario 64'.

Gamecube Years and on

But even then he continues his many, many adventures as he faces 'Shadow Mario' in 'Super Mario Sunshine', reunites with Luigi for a sibling adventure in 'Mario & Luigi', and once more sets out with a set of new companions in 'Paper Mario: The Thousand Year Door'. Mario gets in touch with his inner groove in 'Dance Dance Revolution: Mario Mix' to dance his way to recovering the four Music Keys, and he and Luigi team up with their younger selves to stop an alien invasion in 'Mario & Luigi: Partners in Time'. During 'New Super Mario Bros.', Mario once again goes against Bowser and Bowser Jr. in eight new worlds to rescue Princess Peach.

Mario makes his home in the 'Pipe House', a home frequently seen in the RPGs. He lives here with his brother Luigi, who tends to watch the house while Mario is away. His favored weapon is the hammer or a koopa shell. His history after the events in 'Yoshi's Island' and before 'Donkey Kong' are rather mysterious. Unofficial sources indicate that he was raised in Italy and later moved to Brooklyn, though 'Yoshi's Island DS' shows him still living on Yoshi's Island, and he is still in the Mushroom Kingdom as a baby in 'Mario & Luigi: Partners in Time.' At present, Mario continues to keep active by participating in several parties, sports games and races with a healthy competitive attitude. Despite being the hero of nearly everyone in the Mushroom Kingdom, Mario continues out of a sense of justice and not for glory. But he is not immune to danger, for his brother has had to rescue him several times.

Trivia

  • Mario was originally called Jumpman before receiving his name 'Mario' in Mario Bros.
  • Like Luigi, his original outfit was different. He used to wear red overalls with a blue shirt.
  • Mario apparently received his name from Nintendo of America's Italian landlord 'Mario Segali'.
  • Mario 'joined' the Koopa Troop when Bowser joined his party in Super Mario RPG. His brother Luigi would inadvertantly share the same fate in the beginning of 'Mario & Luigi: Superstar Saga'.
