Manaphy is a caring, aquatic legendary Pokémon that was introduced in the fourth generation games. It is unique in that it does not seem to have an evolutionary line, but it is capable of laying eggs containing Phione. Manaphy is a Pokémon that is obtainable primarily through Nintendo events or through transfers from the Pokémon Ranger subseries.

Information

Manaphy eggs are rare and need great care to properly hatch. Manaphy are usually born on cold seafloors. Water makes up 80% of its body, and it is a Pokémon that is easily affected by its environment. They have been known to swim great distances to return to their birthplace. Manaphy is born with a wondrous power that allows it to bond with the hearts of any Pokémon. This seems to refer to its Heart Swap move, although it does not actually learn this until Level 36.

Manaphy's breeding process draws some mysteries. Manaphy can only be obtained by being hatched from special eggs, but it is unknown what Pokémon produces Manaphy eggs and how. Manaphy themselves can produce eggs when bred with Ditto. Their eggs contain the separate Pokémon Phione. Although Phione would appear to be a baby version of Manaphy (and indeed there are many similarities between the two species), Phione cannot evolve into a Manaphy.

Manaphy has not been found in the wild and can only be obtained from a Nintendo event or by hatching an egg sent from a Pokémon Ranger.

Other Games

Each installment of the Pokémon Ranger subseries has a Ranger Net Mission where the player has to save a Manaphy Egg. The Manaphy Egg can then be sent to any of the fourth generation games (only Diamond and Pearl in the first game), as it can only hatch in those environments. The egg could be obtained in missions at Lyra Forest in Pokémon Ranger (where it is targeted by the Go-Rock Squad), Vientown in Pokémon Ranger: Shadows of Almia (where it has to be retrieved from a Happiny) and Latolato Trail in Pokémon Ranger: Guardian Signs (where it has to be protected from the Pokémon Pinchers). In Pokémon Mystery Dungeon: Explorers of Time and Darkness, Manaphy could be hatched from a Wonder Egg at Surrounded Sea and then had to be taken care of after falling sick with help from Walrein. Manaphy matures enough to join the team at Sharpedo Bluff following Darkrai's defeat.

In Pokémon Rumble, Manaphy could be obtained with a ticket from releasing three Phione. Manaphy also appears in PokéPark Wii: Pikachu's Adventure at the Beach Zone

Video Games

• In Super Smash Bros. Brawl, Manaphy was one of the Pokémon that could be randomly summoned while using the Poké Ball item. It used Heart Swap to make the user temporarily switch bodies with an opponent. Manaphy's appearance was accompanied by a trophy and sticker.

Other Media

• In the Pokémon anime, Manaphy starred in the ninth movie where it was known as the Prince of the Sea. Ash's group helped the Pokémon Ranger Jack Walker to protect a Manaphy Egg. It identified May as his mother, and they formed a loving bond, but they were forced to part ways so that Manaphy could focus on helping the People of the Water to find Samiya.
• In the Pokémon Adventures manga, Manaphy was alluded to and shown in silhouette near the end of the Emerald arc as the Pokémon that Archie hoped to find using Jirachi. His intentions were unknown, but likely had something to do with his penchant for Water-types.

Trivia

• Its name seems to be a combination of "mana" (which refers to a conceptual life force) and "fairy" (since it is small and has great power).
• Manaphy is the only Pokémon that can reproduce regularly, although it is apparently incapable of giving birth to its own kind.
