Goombario is a brilliant young Goomba from a family in Goomba Village that never defected to the Koopa Troop. He has heard many tales of Mario's adventures and is a great admirer. Because of this, Goombario has extensively studied all of Mario's enemies and can quote their strengths and weaknesses by heart. He is quite knowledgeable about objects unique to the Mushroom Kingdom and well versed in regards to its inhabitants as well, from Princess Peach herself to the lowliest citizen. Goombario has taken his fighting techniques from his grandfather, Goompa, who was a great adventurer in his early years.

Mario first meets Goombario after being thrown from Princess Peach's Castle at the start of Paper Mario. He is rescued by the family of Goombas and in turn rescues Goompa, who rewards Mario with a badge and suggests that he take Goombario on his adventure. Goombario is greatly obliged and becomes the first of Mario's partners. By the end of their quest, Goombario has returned to his quiet life, though he and his family take the time to go to Peach's celebration.

Over the course of the adventure, Goombario receives three letters, first from the Goomba Bros., then Goompa, and finally Gooma.

Gameplay

Goombario displays his Tattle ability.

Outside of battle, Goombario provides Mario with information on areas, people, and items that he's standing next to. Oftentimes this information provides a hint on what Mario does next, or can provide an interesting backstory to some of the characters met.

Headbonk - Goombario jumps on an enemy headfirst, similar to Mario's Jump.
Tattle - Goombario informs Mario about an enemy's HP, defense, attack, and various quirks. Enemies that Goombario has Tattled will have an HP bar under them henceforth.
Charge - For 1 FP, Goombario can raise his attack power by 2 points.
Multibonk - For 3 FP, Goombario can bounce on an enemy repeatedly, similar to Mario's Power Bounce.

Other Appearances

Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door

Like the rest of the Paper Mario partners, Goombario appeared set to make a cameo in Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door; a remade sprite of him (seen to the right) was found. However, only Parakarry and Bow made the final cut, and it is unknown what role Goombario might have played.

Super Paper Mario

A card of Goombario can be found in Super Paper Mario on the twentieth floor of the Flopside Pit of 100 Trials. It can be sold for 315 coins and gives the following description:

#241 "Mario and Goombario go way back to Paper Mario. Enemies suffer when he uses his head."

Trivia

Goombario is not the only student of Goompa; The Master of the Dojo studied under him as well, while Tayce T. learned her cooking skills from Gooma.
