'Anju (also known as the Cucco Lady) is a recurring character from the The Legend of Zelda series. The versions of Anju residing in Hyrule are women who are known for a great love of the Cucco birds. The birds often flee her pen, but she offers rewards to anyone who returns them. A different version of Anju was presented in Majora's Mask.

Background

Ocarina of Time

In Ocarina of Time Anju resided at Kakariko Village. She was the daughter of Mutoh and Granny, and she also had a brother Grog who ran away from home. Anju raised her Cuccos despite being allergic to them. When Link first came to the village, he could collect her runaway Cuccos for her, and she would reward him with a Bottle. During the seven years that passed during Link's slumber, Anju researched at the Marine Research Laboratory to make a new breed of Cucco that she was not allergic to. She called it the Pocket Cucco.

If Link made her first Pocket Cucco happy, she thanked Link and gave him another Cucco to make happy: Cojiro, Grog's Cucco who had not cawed since his owner ran away. Anju also attended the celebration at Lon Lon Ranch, where she juggled Cuccos for Biggoron.

Other Games

Anju also appeared in Hyrule Castle Town in The Minish Cap. She once again was a keeper of Cuccos, and Link could collect her Cuccos within a time limit as a minigame. This time, it was a series of minigames of increasing difficulty and a variety of prizes ending with a Piece of Heart.

Majora's Mask

The Anju of Termina is quite different from her Hyrulian counterpart. She works at a family business, the Stock Pot Inn with her mother and Granny, who is her actual grandmother this time. Her father Tortus's fate is unrevealed. Anju is a good receptionist and great cleaner, but at the same time a bad cook and has bad memory. She's also best friends with Cremia of Romani Ranch, seemingly unaware of her feelings for Kafei, and despite the accusations of her mother claiming that Kafei's disappearance is due to an affair with Cremia.

Anju has a deep romance with the mayor's son, Kafei. One year, the year of Majora's Mask, they decide to fuse their masks at the Carnival of Time and become a true couple. But one month before the wedding, Kafei goes missing. In the three days before the Carnival, Anju enlists Link's help to find Kafei after receiving a letter from him. If Link brings Anju the Pendent of Memories on the second day, Anju decides to stay in town and wait for Kafei instead of leaving town for shelter at Romani Ranch as her mother pressures her to, choosing to believe in him and his promise.

Anju and Kafei are reunited in the hours just before the moon hits Termina, and she accepts him despite his child-like appearance. She fuses her Moon's Mask with his Sun's Mask to make the Couple's Mask. After Link and the Giants save Termina, Anju and Kafei are wed on the dawn of the new day.

Other Appearances

  • Anju appears in the Majora's Mask manga adaptation. She first appears in the first chapter, helping to take care of the Deku Link thinking him to be lost and hurt, also telling him about her troubles with Kafei. The last chapters also involve the Kafei subplot, but instead of Kafei going directly to Anju, he joins Link in confronting the Skull Kid on the Clock Tower. Tatl then guides Anju to the tower as well, where they share a reunion identical to their one in the game. The epilogue also shows their wedding as seen in the game.
  • Anju makes a brief appearance in The Minish Cap manga to bring food from her chicks and unknowingly saving a shrunken Link from their attempts to eat him. Link winds up looking up her dress until Anju unknowingly steps on him.

Trivia

  • Anju's clothing appears in Animal Crossing as purchasable clothing, referred to as "Anju's Shirt". This is accompanied by clothing for Kafei.
  • She was unnamed in her original appearance (and commonly known as the "Cucco Lady") but was referred to as Anju in all appearances starting with Majora's Mask.
