Devdan is a playable unit in Fire Emblem: Path of Radiance, known for his eccentricities. A playable unit named Danved, who is essentially the same person, also appears in Fire Emblem: Radiant Dawn.
Background[edit]
Devdan was a strange man who spoke in third person. He was very emotional and liked to make sure that people were happy. Otherwise, Devdan became upset. He also had a strong love for flowers. He also had a number of tricks that he performed, such as making a drawing he dubbed "Nadved" speak, presumably through some form of ventriloquism. However, he was caught sneaking into Bishop Oliver's flower garden and was forced to work as a soldier in Oliver's estate.
His time as Oliver's indentured servant came to an end in "Chapter 16: The Atonement". Devdan and the others were called in to battle Ike and his mercenary group during their attack on Oliver's estate. Devdan was reluctant to fight, and he would stop fighting to talk if one of the children in Ike's ranks (Mist, Rolf, Tormod, Sothe or Soren) approached him. After learning that Oliver was holding a laguz slave, Devdan decided to work for him no more and started helping Ike's group. He also attempted to convince Ike to lighten up more. After the war ended, Devdan simply remarked that he was glad that the war was gone and welcomed back peace.
In Radiant Dawn a man who seemingly was Devdan appeared. However, he called himself Danved and claimed to have no relation with Devdan. Danved was a friend of Calill and Largo who often spent time at their shop. He was recruited in the Base Conversation of "Chapter 3: Geoffrey's Charge" in "Part 2: Of Countries and Kings". He volunteered to join Geoffrey's forces in the battle against Lord Ludveck since he was not a Crimean citizen, as Geoffrey had declined Calill's offer to join them because he did not want to endanger civilians. He continued to fight alongside Geoffrey's men in "Endgame: Elincia's Gambit" and the chapters of "Part 3: Intersecting Vows" featuring Geoffrey's group, until he was integrated into the main army in "Endgame: From Pain, Awakening".
Following the war, Danved retired from the life of a soldier and became a traveling performer.
Support Conversation Summaries[edit]
In Path of Radiance, Devdan is capable of having Support conversations with three other characters.
- Largo- In the first conversation, Devdan acts as a street performer for Largo and shows him a drawing called Nadved. Largo is unimpressed until he hears Nadved speak, at which he point he is excited. In the next conversation, Largo finds Nadved lying in the street and attempts to make the paper talk to him, but when it remains silent he then crumbles it up, but Nadved begins screaming. Devdan arrives, at which point Largo, filled with guilt, nervously runs away to hide the "body". Devdan remarks that it was his fault for showing Largo his trick, but at the same time says he can't tell Largo how it's done because it is a shameful secret. In the third conversation, Largo apologizes for crumpling up Nadved. However, Devdan says that he is Nadved's friend so he is able to bring him back by drawing a new picture, and he says that they are all friends who forgive each other. Largo is overjoyed at this, and Devdan then has Largo come closer to hear a message from Nadved. Largo does so and begins screaming.
- Nephenee- Devdan approaches Nephenee and notes that she looks angry all the time and offers to teach her how to laugh, but Nephenee is frightened of him and asks him not to hurt her. In the next conversation, he tries teaching her how to laugh and says that her fear of him upsets him. He tells her the story of a girl he knew from a village who was too serious, and she got killed by bandits, and he wants to prevent Nephenee from befalling a similar fate. Nephenee then begins to call for help from the commander. In the final conversation, Nephenee attempts to ward off Devdan by approaching him and smiling, and constantly tries to prevent Devdan from remembering the dead girl and becoming upset. Finally Nephenee decides to smile and back away slowly.
- Tormod- Devdan and Tormod are assigned to take care of the weapons, and Devdan arrives abruptly, startling Tormod. Tormod complains about having to do chores but Devdan says it will be useful to know about a variety of weapons on the battlefield. In the next conversation, Devdan comes to Tormod when he is wounded and waiting for a healer, but Devdan says he cannot always depend on others and should learn how to take care of himself. Devdan then decides to demonstrate how. In the final conversation, Tormod is depressed, thinking his powers are useless, and he is not even startled by Devdan's sudden arrival. Devdan manages to cheer Tormod up by reminding him of how he felt when first wielding magic and told him to focus on the attitude of becoming stronger and protecting others. Devdan tells Tormod that in exchange he gives Devdan hope that there's always something worth fighting for.
Trivia[edit]
- In the Japanese version of Radiant Dawn, "Danved" is instead called Nadved, perhaps suggesting that this character was supposed to be the drawing from the first game somehow truly brought to life (or at least Devdan pretending to be him).
- Unused Support data from Path of Radiance indicates that he was originally intended to have support conversations with Makalov and Boyd.
