Goombario is a young goomba who lives with his family in Goomba Village. He adores Mario and intends to grow up to be just like him someday. Mario landed in Goomba Village after being trounced by Bowser and the Star Rod in Paper Mario, and after a brief adventure with Goompa in Jr. Troopa's playground, he was joined by Goombario in his quest to save Peach. Goombario provided helpful hints, a few humorous comments, and more than his share of complaints throughout the adventure.

Debut Paper Mario

Goombario is a young Goomba who acted as one of Mario's playable partner characters in the original Paper Mario. He was the first partner who could be recruited in Mario's quest. He is distinguished from other Goombas by the blue cap that he wears and having flat teeth in place of the fangs visible in other Goombas.

Background[edit]

Goombario was a young Goomba who lived at the Goomba Village within the Mushroom Kingdom with his family. He heard many tales of Mario's adventurers and became a big fan of him. A studious young Goomba, he extensively studied all of Mario's enemies and was able to quote their strengths and weaknesses at heart. His studied also made him very familiar with different items, locations and various inhabitants of the Mushroom Kingdom. Goombario also learned some fighting techniques from his grandfather, Goompa, who used to be a great adventurer in his early years.

Mario first met Goombario after being thrown from Princess Peach's Castle within the prologue of Paper Mario. Goombario's sister discovered Mario's unconscious body and brought him to safety. Mario went on to rescue Goompa in turn, who rewarded Mario with a badge and suggested that he take Goombario on his adventure. Goombario was excited by the idea and so was the first partner character to join Mario on his journey. He was available to help Mario throughout this quest. Once Bowser was defeated and the adventure came to an end, Goombario retured to his life at Goomba Village, where he was seen playing around with his sister. After receiving an invitation delivered by Parakarry, he and his family went to attend the celebrations held at Princess Peach's Castle.

Abilities[edit]

Goombario displays his Tattle ability.

Outside of battle, Goombario provides Mario with information on areas, people, and items that he's standing next to. Oftentimes, this information provides a hint on what Mario should do next, or it can provide background information for some of the characters met.

In battle, Goombario has the following attacks:

  • Headbonk - Goombario jumps on an enemy headfirst, similar to Mario's Jump.
  • Tattle - Goombario informs Mario about an enemy's HP, defense, attack, and various quirks. Enemies that Goombario has Tattled will have an HP bar under them henceforth.
  • Charge - For 1 FP, Goombario can raise his attack power by 2 points.
  • Multibonk - For 3 FP, Goombario can bounce on an enemy repeatedly, similar to Mario's Power Bounce.

Other Appearances[edit]
