Whiscash is a earthquake-producing, catfish-like Pokémon that was introduced in the third generation games. It is the evolved form of Barboach.

Information[edit]

Whiscash evolves from Barboach at Level 30. Whiscash is a very territorial Pokémon, and a single one will claim an entire pond or even a large swamp as its turf. Once it is approached by a foe, a Whiscash will usually thrash around angrily, and they can produce massive earthquake-like tremors which could each have a radius of three miles. Performing this often has led Whiscash to mysteriously be able to predict natural earthquakes. It will sleep within its nest in the mud at the bottom of a body of water during the daytime, and during the night it continually feeds. Whiscash has a wide diet which includes every living creature.

Appearances[edit]

Mainstream Games[edit]

In Pokémon: Ruby, Sapphire and Emerald Versions, Whiscash could be found somewhat commonly by fishing with the Super Rod at Meteor Falls and Victory Road. In Diamond, Pearl and Platinum Versions, they were commonly fished with the Super Rod at Routes 205, 208 (Diamond/Pearl only), 210, 212 (Diamond/Pearl only), 225 (Platinum only), 227 and 228, Oreburgh Gate, Ravaged Path, Mt. Coronet, the Great Marsh, Celestic Town (Diamond/Pearl only) and Eterna City. In HeartGold and SoulSilver, they rarely appeared in water at Violet City during swarms. In Black and White, Whiscash could uncommonly appear when fishing in rippling water at Route 8, Icirrus Town and the Moor of Icirrus.

Other Games[edit]

Whiscash could only be obtained through evolution in Pokémon Pinball: Ruby & Sapphire as well as in Pokémon Mystery Dungeon: Red and Blue Rescue Teams. In the former game, it could also appear on the table and could take the player to the Sealeo-themed bonus level if hit in the mouth, although it would instead start an earthquake if hit from behind. In the latter games, a wise non-playable Whiscash lives in the Whiscash pond at Pokémon Square and tells the player about the legend of the Ninetales. In Pokémon Trozei!, it appeared at Secret Storage 12 and Mr. Who's Den. In Explorers of Time and Darkness they could be recruited at the fifth through eighth basement floors of Waterfall Cave.

Other Appearances[edit]

Other Media[edit]

  • In the Pokémon anime, Whiscash was first featured in one Hoenn episode where a fisherman named Sullivan was obsessed with catching a large Whiscash named Nero, but always failed, and Ash also hunted it after it ate his badge case. Ash was able to eventually retrieve it, but Sullivan's attempt to capture it using a Master Ball fell apart once Nero swallowed it. A later episode would have featured a Whiscash and focused on its ability to create earthquakes, but the episode was withheld indefinitely following the coincidental real life tragedy of earthquakes in Japan. Juan also used a Whiscash during his battle with Ash, which lost to his Swellow after a missed Hyper Beam. Other Whiscash have made minor appearances in other episodes.
  • In the Pokémon Adventures manga, during the Ruby/Sapphire arc, Briney was shown to own a Whiscash that had the ability to predict earthquakes, and Wallace was later shown to have his own Whiscash that he used to compete in contests. The difference between the two Whiscash was highlighted by Ruby.

Trivia[edit]

  • Its name is a play on "whiskers" combined with what seems to be a shortening of "catfish".
