War Wasps are an enemy that appear in the Metroid Prime series. They are large flying insects that fire damaging barbs, but are otherwise easily killed.

Information[edit]

War Wasps are a large flying insect that live in hives. An unusual quality to this species is that it's found on Tallon IV, Aether, Arcterra, and Alinos suggesting it was transported from one planet to another or have a different origin. These insects aggressively protect their hives from intruders, usually attacking in large numbers to destroy their enemy. Typically it will attack at close range, but can also energize its stinger and use it as a projectile weapon. This stinger is regenerated within seconds, allowing it to quickly fire once again. Some members of the species can fire their stingers as far as 20 meters.

Different variations of the species have different abilities. Tallon IV is home to at least two different variation of the species. The Barbed War Wasp is an extremely aggressive member of the species (and the species that can fire its stringer at 20 meters). This variation was particularly fierce when their hives were damaged by the Incinerator Drone. The Ram War Wasps have a truly developed 'hive mind' to control its members. The species is far faster than other species and will quickly circle its preys before firing a stinger. On Arcterra, the Blue Barbed War Wasp has adapted to the colder climate and utilizes the frigate temperature to form its projectile weapons.

On Aether, War Wasps were often possessed by the Ing. War Wasps were particularly useful to the Ing due to its variety of attacks and ability to fly. The War Wasps were used by young Ing darklings as a form of initiation. The symbiosis of Ing and War Wasp made the species more durable, but offered little other benefits.
