Debut Pokémon Snap

Todd is a young Pokémon photographer who was featured as the main character of Pokémon Snap and as a non-playable supporting character in New Pokémon Snap.

Background[edit]

Todd was a traveling photographer who took pictures of various Pokémon. He once encountered a Mew in his travels, but the Mew was so quick that he only got passing shots of the Mew's tail.

Pokémon Snap[edit]

One day, Todd received a letter from Professor Oak. Oak was doing research on the native species on Pokémon Island. He thought to ask Trainers to assist him in his research, but became worried that they'd become interested in catching the Pokémon. Therefore it was necessary for him to enlist Todd's help to complete his Pokémon Report, which called for pictures of every single native species on the island. Since Todd's specialty was wildlife, he seemed like a natural choice. At Oak's laboratory, the Pokemon professor revealed his new machine, the ZERO-ONE, which would act as Todd's vehicle while he photographed the Pokémon. Todd was loaded with Pokémon Food and Pester Balls as his accessories.

Traveling down the beach, through the tunnel, though the smoldering volcano, down a peaceful river, through the cave, and down the rapids, Todd captured photographs of all of the island's native 62 Pokemon. Afterwards, Oak revealed something in his valley laboratory. There was a seventh part of the island, Rainbow Cloud. Here lay Todd's ultimate challenge, which was another shot at Mew. This time Todd was prepared. Through the entire level, he attacked the Mew with Pester Balls, until its shield broke, allowing it to be photographed. Oak's Pokémon Report was complete, and Todd gained his reputation as the person who captured the legendary Mew on film.

New Pokémon Snap[edit]

New Pokémon Snap was set an unspecified amount of years later. Todd had become older and was known as an accomplished Pokémon photographer. He acted as a travel companion for Professor Mirror at one point, and he also gained his own student in the form of an excitable boy named Phil. During the events of New Pokémon Snap, Todd traveled to the Lental Region to help Professor Mirror out with his ecological survey of the area and his study of the Illumina phenomenon. He let Phil directly partake in the survey in his place and lent him his badge for that purpose. Todd stayed in the background and provided advice to the young photographers throughout the game. During the postgame, he also had Professor Mirror install Burst Mode in the photographers' cameras.

Other Appearances[edit]

Other Media[edit]

  • Todd originally appeared in the Pokémon anime, where he traveled with Ash's group for three episodes. Todd also made a guest appearance during the Johto-based series. Along with Jessie and James, Todd is one of the few characters incorporated into the game from the anime.
  • Todd appeared in the Emerald arc for the Pokémon Adventures manga, where he was a press photographer covering the opening of Hoenn's Battle Frontier. He ended up acting as Emerald's sidekick, following him around while frequently questioning his bizarre decisions and behavior. He also worked with Emerald's Latias and Latios friends after being introduced to them. At the end of the arc, Professor Oak was shown to be intrigued by his photos, leading him to contact Todd about taking pictures for him on an island, implying that this lead into Pokémon Snap. He later made a cameo appearance in the Omega Ruby/Alpha Sapphire arc.

Trivia[edit]

  • His Japanese name is "Toru", from the Japanese name for "take", as in "take a photo". The name "Todd" seems to have been chosen to sound similar to Toru, while "Snap" has a similar meaning of "Toru" in that it refers to snapping a photograph.
  • Todd was initially called Snap during video releases of English-dubbed episodes of the Pokémon anime, spreading some confusion about his canon name. When Pokémon Snap received its Wii Virtual Console release, the official Pokémon website combined both names by referring to him as "Todd Snap".
  • In Super Smash Bros. Melee, Todd is mentioned in the ZERO-ONE's trophy description.
