Spiritomb is a special Ghost Pokémon that was introduced in the fourth generation games.

Information

Spiritomb is a ghost Pokémon that resembles a strange vortex, as opposed to any actual shape, attached to an Odd Keystone. It is said to be comprised of 108 spirits. Apparently the high amounts of constant mischief and misdeeds that Spiritomb committed 500 years ago led to it being imprisoned in a fissure within the Odd Keystone by a mysterious spell, and it could only awaken under certain conditions.

In Pokémon: Diamond, Pearl and Platinum, Spiritomb is found at the Hallowed Tower at Route 209 under special conditions. The player must obtain an Odd Keystone and plant it at the Hallowed Tower, then talk with 32 people underground. Increasingly stranger activity occurs at the tower, and when it is checked after having 32 conversations underground, Spiritomb will appear from the keystone to be battled. This process could be repeated with additional Odd Keystones to catch more Spiritomb.

Alternately, Spiritomb can be obtained very rarely in the Quiet Cave area using the Pokéwalker for Pokémon: HeartGold and SoulSilver Versions].

In Pokémon Mystery Dungeon: Explorers of Time and Darkness, Spiritomb can be found on the fifteenth floor of Spacial Rift, the first five basement floors of Deep Spacial Rift and the first forty-nine floors of Sky Stairway. A Spiritomb also appeared as boss of the Sealed Ruins, and in Pokémon Mystery Dungeon: Explorers of Sky, what seems to be the same Spiritomb makes a brief appearance in the Icicle Forest holding Celebi and catching Grovyle in a trap under Dusknoir's orders until being chased away. In Pokémon Ranger: Shadows of Almia, a Spiritomb appears as the boss of the Chroma Ruins during the player's first visit, and it can also be acquired in the second room of the Capture Arena. In Pokémon Rumble, Spiritomb appears at Eternal Tower.

• Spiritomb was featured in an episode of the Pokémon anime, where it was accidentally awakened during a battle between Ash and Dawn and wound up going on a rampage of destruction and mischief. In this continuity it was an Aura Guardian and his Pikachu that had sealed Spiritomb away in the Hallowed Tower 500 years ago, with Team Rocket tricking Spiritomb into thinking Ash was this Aura Guardian's descendant so that it would pursue revenge. Ash and friends were able to defeat Spiritomb and re-seal it away.
• In the Pokémon Adventures manga, a Spiritomb was shown during the Diamond/Pearl arc as one of Cynthia's Pokémon. It served her well throughout her appearances, although it was defeated during her battle with Cyrus once his Weavile froze it.

Trivia

• Its name is a simple combination of "spirit" and "tomb".
• Spiritomb is partially inspired by the Buddhist tradition performed on New Year's Eve in Japan in which 108 bells are rung to drive away 108 evil spirits.
• Its specific dual type means that it has no weakness, making it the second Pokémon (the other being Sableye) without one.
