Spheal is a small and blubbery seal-like Pokémon that was introduced in the third generation games. It is the first in a three-stage evolutionary line, with its evolved forms being Sealeo and Walrein.

Information[edit]

Spheal has a round body which is poorly shaped for swimming, so it usually moves around by rolling across ice floes. It can roll much faster than it can walk. Spheal's body is also covered in fluffy fur which protects it from the cold, even with temperatures below zero. When groups of Spheal have meals together, they are usually noisy since Spheal all clap at once to show their pleasure.

It evolves into Sealeo at Level 32.

Appearances[edit]

Mainstream Games[edit]

In Pokémon: Ruby, Sapphire and Emerald Versions, Spheal were commonly found at Shoal Cave and could also be found less commonly by surfing in the tidal room. In Pearl, it was found somewhat commonly by surfing at Routes 226 and 230. In HeartGold and SoulSilver, it could appear at the Safari Zone's Peak area when enough Water objects were present. In Black and White, they were commonly found when surfing at Undella Bay, but they only appeared during winter.

Other Games[edit]

A Shadow Spheal could be snagged from Cipher Peon Blusix at Cipher Lab in Pokémon XD: Gale of Darkness, and after being purified it could be transferred to any of the third generation color versions. In Pokémon: Pinball: Ruby & Sapphire, it had to be hatched from an egg, and several Spheal also appeared in an ice-themed bonus stage. In Pokémon Trozei!, it appeared at Secret Storage 8, Secret Storage 19, Endless Level 6 and Mr. Who's Den. In Pokémon Mystery Dungeon: Red and Blue Rescue Teams, it could be recruited at the fifteenth through twenty-fourth floors of Stormy Sea, the tenth through nineteenth floors of Silver Trench and Far-off Sea, and the tenth through nineteenth basement floors of Marvelous Sea and Fantasy Strait. In Explorers of Time and Darkness, it was recruitable at Craggy Coast.

In Pokémon Ranger: Shadows of Almia, it was found at Crysta Cave and Hiaburu Field. In Pokémon Ranger: Guardian Signs, it appeared at Mt. Sorbet and the Ice Temple. Spheal also appeared in PokéPark Wii: Pikachu's Adventure at the Glacier Zone.

Other Appearances[edit]

Other Media[edit]

  • In the Pokémon anime, a Spheal was featured in one episode of the Hoenn series belonging to a boy named Marius. Marius tried using it to protect Slateport City's Oceanic Museum, but the Spheal consistently disobeyed him and attacked him instead. The Spheal eventually grew to respect its trainer. Spheal have also made other minor appearances.
  • In the Pokémon Adventures manga, Spheal was briefly shown as one of Glacia's Pokémon during the Ruby/Sapphire arc, and they have also made other minor appearances belonging to other trainers.

Trivia[edit]

  • Its name is a play on "seal" combined with "sphere" (due to its rotund body).
