Riev is a boss from Fire Emblem: The Sacred Stones who acts as one of Grado's six generals.

Background[edit]

Riev was a disgraced bishop whom had been excommunicated from Rausten. He allied himself with Lyon and seemed to be in the minority of the people who knew that Lyon was being influenced by the Dark Stone. He performed many tasks for Lyon as one of his most loyal servants, as he wanted power to get revenge on all those whom had scorned him, especially Mansel, the pontifex of Rausten whom had ousted him. Riev is also implied to be the one who made the deal with Orson to get him to betray Renais. Riev was first seen at the end of "Chapter 3: The Bandits of Borgo", where he was officially elevated to being one of Grado's three new generals along with Caellach and Valter. This promotion was publicly done by Emperor Vigarde, but it was actually Lyon acting through Vigarde's hollow form. Riev and Duessel were then assigned with the defense of the empire and would be provided with details later. He did not seem to care much for his peers and considered Caellach and Valter to be worthless compared to how bust he was. Riev then appeared in "Chapter 6: Victims of War", where he left Novala behind to take on Eirika while he returned to the capital.

In the ninth chapter, Riev and Caellach were assigned to shatter the last of the Sacred Stones, with Riev being assigned with the one in Rausten. He immediately began gleefully planning Rausten's downfall. Along the way, Riev was also responsible for summoning the monsters of the phantom ship, which prevented sea travel (presumably for everyone except Grado) until Ephraim's group stopped it in "Chapter 11: Phantom Ship". In "Chapter 12: Landing at Taizel" of Ephraim's path, he then met with Caellach to call him back to the capital, as Caellach had strayed from his own task of destroying Jehanna's Sacred Stone. He also briefly appeared in Eirika's version of "Chapter 15: Scorched Sand", where he offered to help Valter in the battle against Eirika and warned him that she should be killed before Ephraim's forces arrived. Valter refused his help, and Riev took it for what it was while musing the advantages of Valter's beast-like nature. He left after reminding Valter to get Eirika's bracelet for their master. Riev also accompanied Lyon to meet with Orson at Castle Renais in "Chapter 16: Ruled by Madness". He did all the talking in Eirika's version of the chapter, but in Ephraim's version he remained silent while Lyon was more assertive.

Riev finally made his move against Rausten in "Chapter 19: Last Hope", striking in the darkness of night. He could be beaten, but he would survive and retreat. His forces pulled back into the Darkling Woods at dayfall despite failing to take down Rausten, as the time of the Demon King's revival was approaching. Riev was left to protect the Black Temple in "Chapter 20: Darkling Woods" with a draco zombie of Morva at his side in order to ensure that no one could interrupt his rituals. Ephraims and Eirika's forces still came to oppose him, and Riev was annoyed by their eyes which did not contain despair or surrender. He also had a special conversation with Mansel's daughter L'Arachel, whom he wanted to give a gruesome death in order to devastate Mansel while filling Riev himself with joy. Riev ultimately failed and was killed in that battle, but in his last words he told them that they would be too late to stop the Demon King's revival.
