The Patra (also known as Eyesoar) is a powerful winged eyeball that has appeared as a higher level enemu within several The Legend of Zelda games.

Information[edit]

The Patra takes on the form of a blue eye with a pair of wings that it uses to stay afloat. A Patra is always surrounded by smaller, weaker versions of the Patra in a circular formation. There can be somewhere from four to seven smaller Patras which spin around the Patra, usually with varying patterns. In all Patra battles, the key to destroying the enemy is to bypass the smaller Patra through destroying them or other means, and then attacking the prime Petra directly.

Appearances[edit]

The Patra initially appeared within The Legend of Zelda in the Death Mountain dungeon. They were miniboss-like in nature and appeared within several different rooms. In Oracle of Ages, it appeared as Eyesoar, the boss of the Skull Dungeon. Although the smaller Patra could be destroyed in this version, the prime Patra could still regenerate them. To hurt the Patra, Link had to exploit an opening and use the Switch Hook to switch places with the Patra. This would stun the Patra and leave it temporarily vulnerable to attack, bringing Link one step closer to destroying it.

Other Appearances[edit]

Other Media[edit]

  • The Patras made a brief appearance in an episode of the The Legend of Zelda cartoon, where Link tried to save Zelda from a group of them, but after his sword broke Zelda wound up scaring them away herself.
  • In one of the The Legend of Zelda comics, Zelda was attacked by a group of Patra while in a fight with Gohma. Zelda was able to defeat one before deciding on retreat.

Trivia[edit]

  • Its name is taken from "patapata", the Japanese onomatopoeia for the noise of flapping wings. The name "Eyesoar" is simply a pun on the term "eyesore" combining the fact that it is an eye with the "soar" referring to its wings.
