Onix is a serpentine rock Pokémon that was introduced in the first generation games. Originally believed to have no evolutionary line, it was later discovered to evolve into Steelix in the second generation.

Information[edit]

Onix can rapidly burrow through the ground by at speeds of 50 miles per hour in search of food by squirming and twisting its massive body. It absorbs many objects as it digs, which make its body so solid. The tunnels it forms are often used as homes by Diglett. The loud roar of its tunneling echoes and can be hard from miles away. Onix has a magnet in its brain which acts as a compass so that it does not lose direction while burrowing.

As an Onix grows older, its body slowly becomes rounder and smoother. The stone portions of its body also harden to become similar to black-colored diamonds. They feed on large boulders, and their tunneling has also caused tremors and rumbling. An Onix will eventually evolve into a Steelix only when traded while holding a Metal Coat.

Appearances[edit]

Mainstream Games[edit]

In Pokémon: Red, Blue, Yellow, FireRed and LeafGreen, Onix appeared uncommonly at Rock Tunnel and more commonly at Victory Road. In FireRed/LeafGreen, they could also rarely be found at Sevault Canyon.

Silver, and one could also be obtained by trading a Bellsprout to a trainer at Violet City. Through the Pokéwalker, Onix could also be caught at the Dim Cave, Rugged Road and Night Sky's Edge courses, from which they could be transferred to HeartGold/SoulSilver.

Other Media[edit]

  • In the Pokémon anime, Onix was featured as one of Brock's main Pokémon. However, after the Johto series he left it with his brother Forrest at the Pewter City gym. It was later shown to evolve into a Steelix. One episode during the Kanto series featuring a giant Onix rampaging until Bruno managed to calm it by pulling out a Sandslash that was stuck in it. During the Orange Islands arc, the gym leader Drake used an Onix in battle, and one episode revolved around the search for a Crystal Onix. A Hoenn era episode featured a King Onix with its own kingdom. Roark was later shown with his own Onix that defeated Ash's Turtwig and Pikachu in the first gym battle but was beaten during the rematch.
  • In the Pokémon Adventures manga, Onix was featured as one of Brock's Pokémon. Bruno was also later shown with his own Onix, which acted as a "bridge" on which he had his battles, and it was later used to evacuate the Elite Four from Cerise Island.

Trivia[edit]

  • Its name is a play on "onyx", the name of a mineral.
