The New Nintendo 3DS was an enhanced version of the original 3DS that was released in 2014 and 2015. It was released alongside the larger version, known as the New Nintendo 3DS XL (or New Nintendo 3DS LL in Japan).

History[edit]

In Japan, the New 3DS and New 3DS XL were both released in October 2015, with the XL edition being released several weeks before the standard edition. Both versions were next released for Australia on the same day in the following month. In Europe, the New 3DS was first made available to Club Nintendo members in January 2015 as part of a special promotion that was known as the Ambassador Edition; it was a white version of the console which came with a charging station and two face plates. In the following month, both versions of New 3DS had their standard release on the same day. In North America, the New 3DS XL was released in America first, in February 2015 (the same day as the European releases), and the standard version was not made available until September of that year.

The standard version of the New 3DS was discontinued in July 2017. The New 3DS XL was discontinued in Europe in December 2017, but it remains in production for other regions.

Features[edit]

The New 3DS has all of the features of the original 3DS, but with various additional features. The system has a new design which has added several new buttons (a C-Stick and two extra shoulder buttons, ZL and ZR), as well as coloring the four normal buttons in an homage to the Super NES. The system's stereoscopic 3D feature was enhanced with a feature known as Super Stable 3D, which used to sensor to make the 3D adjust to match the angle that a player was playing from.

This version also features enhanced processing power and memories, making it more powerful than the 3DS and increasing the scope of games that could be played on the New 3DS. This resulted in some games being produced that could only be played on the New 3DS, including the Super NES games that could be downloaded as part of the 3DS Virtual Console. Other 3DS games were made that were playable across both versions, but had enhanced performance and functionality when played on the New 3DS. The New 3DS also has compatibility with amiibo figures, which was incorporated into some post-New 3DS releases.

As with other DS/3DS systems, it was also possible for data from a 3DS to be permanently transferred to a New 3DS.

Variations[edit]

Aside from the aforementioned New 3DS XL, there was a New Nintendo 2DS XL that was released in 2017. It was essentially an upgraded version of the original 2DS that carried over the enhanced processing power and some of the features from the New 3DS, such as the added controls and amiibo support.
