Mike Jones is the hero of both StarTropics and Zoda's Revenge: StarTropics II. He's a 15-year old from Seattle who visits C-Island where his uncle conducts research.

Background[edit]

StarTropics[edit]

Back home in Seattle, Mike Jones is an ace pitcher for his baseball team. His uncle, Dr. Steve Jones is a famous archaeologist who has spent several years on C-Island researching various mysteries. However on the night before Mike Jones was going to visit his uncle, the good doctor suddenly went missing.

When Mike arrived in Coralcola village, he met with the chief and learned what happened. He resolved to head to Dr. Jones's laboratory, which meant fighting a variety of creatures that had taken over the caves under the island. Armed with a yo-yo from the tribe, he was able to make it to the laboratory and defeat the C-Serpent. Dr. Jones was not there, but his assistant Baboo was present. He gave Mike the information necessary to use the Sub-C so that he would follow the path Dr. Jones had taken.

With the Sub-C's navigation computer, Nav-Com, the two were able to navigate through the other nearby islands. They faced Octo the Huge, saved dolphins, fought storms, and for a time wrecked near the village of Miracola. In order for the chief to repair his sub, he had to save his daughter who had been put into a slumber. The only way to do this was to defeat Magma, only to find the female-only castle of Shecola. A detour led him to the Ghost Village where he used the magical Rod of Sight to make the spirits visible. After fighting Maxie the ghost inside, he got the fortune ball he was searching for and brought it back to the fortune teller who had sent him to get it.

Mike Jones likes to stick bananas in his ears.

The fortune teller gave Mike the ability to enter Shecola - by dressing as a girl. From there he learned from the queen the code to continue west so he could continue to Hermit's Mountain. At the top of the mountain he met the poet, Po, who gave Mike a scroll to wake up the chief's daughter. When he finally returned with the scroll, the villagers made the Sub-C seaworthy again. As he continued his adventure to Tunacola, he learned that his uncle's assistant, Baboo, had been looking for him. They both ended up inside the belly of a whale and had to use a lighter to get the whale to spit them out. Afterwards, Mike learned his uncle had been abducted by aliens.

His adventures continued in Bellcola where he was blocked from progressing by an abandoned pirate ship. He earned the aid of a parrot named Peter. This let him enter Captain Bell's Cave where he fought against undead pirates. He was able to find a switch here to cause the pirate ship to sink beneath the waves, allowing the Sub-C to continue along. He arrived in Howduyado-Cola village where he heard that Dr. Jones had been spotted. He made his way to the spot and found his uncle. He had come to investigate a meteor that was supposed to be an escape pod from the planet of Argonia. The cubes inside were taken by evil aliens though and Mike agreed to help by finding the three cubes kept by the aliens.

Mike in his battle against Zoda

He traveled to the space craft and inside found a laser gun. He had to fight the Jet Pack Jumpers inside to get the cubes until he came to the leader of the aliens, their master Zoda. With his weapons in hand, Mike Jones was able to defeat Zoda and escape the ship in an escape pod with the three cubes. He woke up later on the beach of C-Island after being carried back by the dolphin he had helped. After returning to Coralcola village, the three cubes transformed into the seven children of Argonia, last of their species.

Zoda's Revenge[edit]

The Argonians stayed on C-Island while Mike and his uncle returned to Seattle. Dr. Jones set about trying to break a cipher on some text in the escape pod. A few years later, Mike was contacted by Mica, one of the Argonians, who had information regarding the cipher. After Mike gave his uncle the information, Steve Jones realized the secret to the cipher was reading it backwards. Without a thought, Mike did just just that he vanished into the pages of the Oxford Wonder World. Through various points he would be aided by none other than Merlin, who had been instructed to help him by an old friend.

This took him into an adventure through different time periods. He spent time with the cavemen, then in Ancient Egypt where he met Cleopatra, to Baker Street in London where he met Sherlock Holmes and helped him on a case. For a short time he was in early America during the gold rush. He then ended up in Italy where he met up with Leonardo da Vinci. He even visited Dracula's Castle. He then ended up in Camelot where he met King Arthur and claimed the last of the Tetrads. He slayed a dragon there before he finally returned to C-Island in the present.

Mike was forced to retrace his steps back to the cave where his adventures began. He fought a skeletal C-Serpent before fighting Zoda himself - or rather, multiple copies of him. With a blast from the Ultra Psychic Shockwave, Zoda-Z was defeated. With the Argonians rescued, the Tetrads were reassembled which transformed into the father of the children, King Hirocon. With the family reunited, they returned to the planet Argonia to rebuilt their society. With his final adventure over, Mike exclaimed: "What a wild adventure! If I hadn't lived it, I wouldn't believe it!"

Trivia[edit]

  • Mike bears many similarities to Ness of Earthbound fame. Among Mike's notable arsenal is his Yo-Yo, a baseball bat, and the Psychic Shockwave move - all of which are weapons that Ness uses as well.
