Maple is a supporting character from the Legend of Zelda series. She is an apprentice witch who appeared in the Oracles games.

Background[edit]

Maple was a young witch who learned under the "Great Witch" Syrup. She was immature and spent most of her time cruising around Holodrum or Labrynna (depending on the game) on her magic broomstick. Bumping into Link would cause them both to scatter their items, and Maple would angrily declare that whoever picked up the dropped items would keep them. There was a chance of her dropping a Piece of Heart in each game. After enough encounters, Maple would board a flying vacuum cleaner and later a small UFO to collect dropped items more efficiently.

She also played a role in the trading sidequest of each game. In Oracle of Seasons, she needed the Lon Lon Egg for Syrup and gave Link a Ghastly Doll in exchange. In Oracle of Ages, she accepted the Touching Book and gave him a Magic Oar that she had made which was rejected by Syrup.

Other Appearances[edit]

Other Media[edit]

  • She appeared in the manga adaptation of Oracle of Seasons with a larger role as one of Link's companions. She joined with Link only to find the Rod of Seasons and left with it afterwards. She later returned and aided Link during the final battle with Onox.

Trivia[edit]

  • In the GBA remake of A Link to the Past (which was made by the same developer), the appearance of Syrup's nameless assistant, who runs the potion shop, is altered to resemble Maple.
  • Her name is of course taken from "maple syrup" in reference to her mentor Syrup.
  • In the Oracle games, she appears in a random area every time Link kills 30 monsters (or 15 monsters when using Maple's Ring).
  • In A Link Between Worlds, a teenage witch named Irene appears who seems to have been inspired by Maple. Additionally, at one point the Lorule counterpart of the game's unnamed Old Witch (Irene's grandmother) is referred to as 'Mapes', which could be an affectionate nickname for 'Maple'. This raises the possibility that Hyrule's version of the old witch could be an older Maple, or at the very least it is a reference to her.
  • In Breath of the Wild, an area called Mable Ridge is named in reference to her.
