Lulu is a Zora singer who appeared as a supporting character in The Legend of Zelda: Majora's Mask.

Background[edit]

Lulu was descended from a bloodline of Zoras who were supposed to protect the Great Bay Temple, but Lulu herself seemed to be unaware of this, likely because it is implied that her mother died when she was young. Her mother was also a well-known singer and was the original Lulu. She used to sing the New Wave Bossa Nova to her when she was very young, but Lulu forgot it as she grew older. As an adult, Lulu became the lead singer of the popular Indigo-Gos and formed a close friendship with the lead guitarist, Mikau.

During Majora's Mask, everything began going wrong for Lulu when their big concert at the Carnival of Time approached. She unexpectedly laid a set of seven Zora eggs and suddenly lost her voice. Lulu became distant from other band members to keep this a secret, and only Evan and Tito were told of her condition, as their concert would have to be cancelled if they could no retrieve her voice. She was planning to take the eggs to the Marine Research Laboratory for examination, but things only got worse two days later when Gerudo pirates broke into her room and stole the eggs. Lulu found herself communicating the truth to Mikau shortly afterwards, even though he was the one person he was reluctant to talk about it with, and she was embarrassed as she filled him in on the situation. Mikau quickly raced off to retrieve the eggs due to being the only Zora among them still capable of fighting, and Lulu was worried that he would do something too rash.

Lulu was unaware that Mikau wound up being killed by the pirates. Link was instead able to save the Zora eggs and assumed Mikau's form using the Zora Mask. When the eggs hatched, the Zora babies taught Link the New Wave Bossa Nova. Playing it before Lulu caused her to remember the song and regain her voice. Her singing the song also summoned the giant turtle that had been slumbering under the ocean, and the turtle contained passage to the Great Bay Temple so that Link could clear it of evil. Lulu was surprised and confused by this series of events. She did realize that her eggs were laid to remind her of the song. If Link was in Zora form, she would recognize him as Mikau and apologize for everything she put him through. At the same time, she was glad to finally be better. After the Great Bay Temple was resolved, Lulu rehearsed with the rest of the band at Zora Hall. At the end, the whole band was seen performing together at the Milk Bar during the Carnival of Time (which caused some confusion as to whether the guitarist was a somehow saved Mikau or Link wearing the Zora Mask, even though he seemed to have left before that point).

Trivia[edit]

  • Lulu seems to be the Terminan counterpart of Princess Ruto from Ocarina of Time, but with some design changes such as wearing a dress. This is referenced in a trivia question where Ruto's name is one of the choices for a question referring to Lulu.
  • The father of her eggs is unclear within the game, but it is strongly implied to be Mikau, due to their close relationship as well as Mikau's determination to save the eggs once he learned of them and Lulu's reluctance to specifically tell Mikau about the eggs.
  • In Breath of the Wild, there is a Lulu Lake named in reference to her. It is located in Zora territory, and near Mikau Lake.
  • In Hyrule Warriors, one of Ruto's alternate costumes is based on Lulu's appearance. It was originally made available through the Master Quest DLC pack and was known as the "Standard Outfit (Master Quest)".
