Guru-Guru is a recurring minor character from the The Legend of Zelda series. He is usually portrayed as an organ grinder who often works at windmills and can easily become infuriated.

Background

Ocarina of Time

Guru-Guru worked at a windmill in Kakariko Village, where he merrily played his music. However, Guru-Guru dreamed of a song that went around and around like the windmill. He got what he wanted when a boy came to him and played the Song of Storms. This summoned a shower that sped the windmill up. Guru-Guru was initially overjoyed about this, but his joy turned into rage when he realized that the windmill was spinning too fast. He memorized the Song that had brought him this grief.

Seven years later, Guru-Guru was still in the windmill, but he had become bitter and angry. A young man eventually visited him. Since this man reminded Guru-Guru of the boy, Guru-Guru taught him the Song of Storms. However, when the man played it on his ocarina, another rainstorm came and caused the windmill to spin wildly out of control once again. In that moment, Guru-Guru realized that the man and the boy were the same person, Link. Afterwards Link traveled back in time to when he was a child to play the song for Guru-Guru the first time, forming a time loop.

In the game's ending, Guru-Guru was seen in a better mood attending the celebration of Ganondorf's defeat at Lon Lon Ranch.

Majora's Mask

The Termina version of Guru-Guru once played the part of a human in an animal troupe, until he was disgusted that a dog was chosen over him to lead the troupe. The dog turned out to be a good leader, but Guru-Guru stole the dog's Bremen Mask and left the troupe.

Guru-Guru kept this dark secret and became a member of the Gorman troupe. If Link met him one night at the laundry pool in Clock Town, Guru-Guru would confess his crime to Link, his mood swinging rapidly as he did so. He felt better after his confession and gave Link the Bremen Mask.

Other Games

In Oracle of Seasons, Guru-Guru worked at a windmill located in the Woods of Winter. He thought his windmill wasn't going fast enough and wanted something to grease it up. Link gave him some of Syrup's Engine Grease, and Guru-Guru gave him a Phonograph in exchange. History then repeated itself, because the Engine Grease caused the windmill to spin wildly out of control.

Trivia

• "Guruguru" is Japanese onomatopoeia for "turning around and around", which can refer to both the windmills and his barrel organ.
• He was unnamed in his original appearance and referred to simply as the "windmill guy", but Majora's Mask established his name as Guru-Guru, and this name was used again for his appearance in Oracle of Seasons.
