Gooper Blooper is a recurring boss character from the Super Mario series who originally appeared in Super Mario Sunshine. He is a giant counterpart of the Blooper enemy who is primarily known to attack using inky goop.

Background

Gooper Blooper was a giant Blooper creature, possibly made of goop. Unlike other Bloopers, it had longer tentacles and blue spots on its body. It also appeared to be unable to float like other Bloopers. Instead, Gooper Blooper often acted as a stationary enemy that would attack with his tentacles and by firing goop or ink. This Blooper also possessed incredible regenerative properties that could allow him to quickly grow another set of tentacles to replace any that were lost. He was also often depicted with a cork in his mouth.

Mario faced Gooper Blooper at Isle Delfino in Super Mario Sunshine three times. The first time, they battled in Ricco Harbor in the residential area. Mario was able to pull off all his tentacles off and defeat him. Mario later faced him again at Ricco Harbor on the Helicopter Pad and defeated him in a similar manner. After that, Gooper Blooper moved on to Noki Bay, and there Mario beat him once last time.

In Super Princess Peach, Gooper appeared as the boss of Wavy Beach, the fifth world. He would attack with four of his tentacles (as well as spitting out bubbles of goop), but Princess Peach could stun each tentacle by hitting them with Perry after dodging it. After all four tentacles were stunned, Peach could then harm Gooper Blooper by attacking its mouth. After being hit enough times, it would begin falling asleep in mimicry of the Calm Vibe in an attempt to restore its health, but Peach could interrupt this process and force it awake simply by using the Rage Vibe to burst its bubble.

Gooper Blooper also appeared in Paper Mario: Sticker Star as the boss of the third world faced at Whitecap Beach. In this game, he was shown to have a passion for dancing around and was not attempting anything evil until a Royal Sticker landed on his head. This corrupted him and his fellow Bloopers, who ended up releasing poison into the water. In this battle, Gooper Blooper fought along to the music. After Mario defeated him, he was left completely clean and sank into the depths while surrendering the Royal Sticker to Mario. In Paper Mario: The Origami King, a Paper Macho version of Gooper Blooper appeared as a boss who was faced in the overworld. He had attacked and wrecked the cruise ship that was known as The Princess Peach, but Mario eventually stood up to him. He could attack with his tentacles and released shock waves that resembled ocean waves. He could also spit out ink that could slow Mario down. Mario had to use his hammer to destroy several of his tentacles and then attack his face whenever he was stunned until he was destroyed. This released all of the Toads that he had swallowed.

Sports Games

Unlike other characters appearing in the various Mario sports games, Gooper Blooper has never been included as a playable character. Rather, he tends to appear as a boss character or obstacle in a stage.

• Tennis: In Mario Power Tennis, he appeared as a boss in one of the challenge modes and had a tennis court named after him. In order to beat his boss challenge, the player had to get 20, then 50, and then 100 volleys against him. He also appeared as the fourth boss of the Adventure Mode in Mario Tennis Aces, where he was faced at Savage Sea Bay.
• Baseball: In Mario Super Sluggers, Gooper Blooper appears as an obstacle in the Blooper Run minigame, in addition to appearing at the Daisy Cruiser stadium at night to tilt the ship.
• Other Sports: In Mario Hoops 3 on 3, he appears at the Pirate Ship course. Here he appears as a Kraken-like monster and will menace the passengers on the boat.
• The Olympics: In Mario & Sonic at the London 2012 Olympic Games, Gooper Blooper appears as the final obstacle in the Dream Rafting competitions held at Cheep Cheep River.

Trivia

• In Japan, he is simply known as Bosu Gesso or Boss Gesso, which is the equivalent of calling him Boss Blooper.
• In the beta version of Super Mario Sunshine, Gooper Blooper was depicted as having dark blue skin. This was changed in the final version, presumably to make his appearance closer to standard Bloopers.
• A trophy of Paper Gooper Blooper (based on his appearance in Sticker Star) appears in Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS.
