Giovanni is the boss of the group known as Team Rocket, a criminal organization dedicated to using Pokémon for their illegal activities. He appears in Pokémon Red, Green, Blue, and Yellow. Though his grunts are encountered multiple times, its not until the player arrives in Celadon City that Giovanni is encountered at his own HQ. After being defeated, he is encountered yet again in Saffron City, where he has just taken over the Silph Co. headquarters.

After another defeat, Giovanni went into hiding in Viridian City, where the player discovers that he is in fact the Gym Leader. After his defeat, he resolves to disband Team Rocket and retires. He is mentioned again in Pokémon: Gold and Silver Versions when his subordinates attempt to call him out of retirement, but is foiled by Gold and Lance. His old gym is also taken over by the player's rival in the first game, Blue.
