Game Boy Wars 3 is a tactical RPG game that was released for the Game Boy Color in 2001. It was the last entry in the Famicom Wars series to be developed by Hudson Soft and was the last of the Famicom Wars games to be made before the release of Advance Wars, which had its original American release just weeks after this game was released in Japan.

Gameplay[edit]

This game notably featured a number of departures from the gameplay of the previous Famicom Wars which were not retained for later games. These changes included materials being needed in addition to funds to make new units, a construction unit that could be clear paths or create bridges on the map and indirect units being able to attack on the same turn that they move. This game sported a Beginner Mode which consisted of 16 tutorials, a Standard Mode where a player can play against the computer or another player on 60 maps and a Campaign Mode which had a storyline that has branching paths depending on the player's performance. In Campaign Mode, players also had the unique option to redeploy surviving units from a previous battle into a later one.

Legacy[edit]

This was the last of the Wars games to be released only in Japan, before the series went international with the release of Advance Wars. It was also notable to be the last Wars game to be available in Japan for several years, as the original Advance Wars had its Japanese release delayed until 2004, when it was released in a compilation with Advance Wars 2: Black Hole Rising as Game Boy Wars Advance 1+2.
