Ewan is a playable unit from Fire Emblem: The Sacred Stones and one of the three trainee units in the game.

Background[edit]

Ewan and his older sister Tethys were abandoned by their parents when Ewan was young enough that he could not talk yet. Tethys took up dancing to raise Ewan by herself. He was very grateful to her and was not too depressed by his past, as he did not remember his parents and constantly met new people during their travels. He was an imaginative and eager youth, although some of his odd ideas got him in trouble from time to time. Tethys eventually began working with Gerik's Mercenaries, and Ewan sought a way to help her in return. He met Saleh when he visited Gerik once and secretly followed him back to Caer Pelyn. Ewan wanted to be a great mage like him and convinced Saleh to train him. Ewan spent several years learning under Saleh, and Saleh brought him to Magvel's various regions. Ewan gained aspirations of becoming a great sage, although he was often a difficult and impatient yet eager student.

Ewan's first appearance in the game differed depending on the path chosen. In Eirika's Path, he appeared at the end of "Chapter 10: Revolt at Carcino", where he was waiting at an inn and convinced Tethys to let him come with her to Eirika's army. Ewan then told Eirika about Caer Pelyn and wound up guiding the army there as an easier path to Jehanna. He wanted to help in battle in "Chapter 11: Creeping Darkness", but Tethys had him sit that one out. Ewan then brought them to Saleh's house, and they convinced him to guide them through Caer Pelyn. Ewan then went ahead to tell Dara. He instead got chased by a revenant (although he apparently slew several others beforehand) in "Chapter 12: Village of Silence" and took shelter within a house until Eirika, Tethys or Saleh visited him. Ewan then officially joined with the army and began helping in battle.

In Ephraim's path, he instead appeared in "Chapter 12: Landing at Taizel". Ewan was sent to Taizel to clear up an error made by the mercenary guild, as they had sent Marisa there instead of to Innes's army. Saleh escorted him to an inn at Taizel, but he then left to continue his search for the Great Dragon and left him with a warning to not use his magic recklessly. Ewan began looking in a village and joined with Ephraim's army if anyone from the army visited him there, as he offered to use his magic to help if they helped him to find Marisa. Ewan could meet with Marisa in the same chapter and convince her to also stick with Ephraim's army for the time being after letting her know about the error. Ewan could also recruit Tethys when Gerik's Mercenaries arrived in "Chapter 13: Flourspar's Oath". Regardless of the path, Ewan served Eirika and Ephraim's army loyally for the duration of the war. He initially took his skills and battles lightly, but as the pressure increased he became more responsible. After the war ended, Ewan ran off following Saleh back to Caer Pelyn.

Possible Fates[edit]

Ewan has three different endings, depending on whether or not he reaches an A Rank Support with one of two characters.

  • Default Ending - Ewan continued his studies and modeled his life after Saleh's teachings. His education eventually branched off into different paths, and his insatiable curiosity led him on a trip to explore the world.
  • Amelia and Ewan's Ending - After the war, they set out on a trip around the world as they promise. Their deeds along the way inspired small legends in the regions they visited. Amelia and Ewan eventually settled down together after she gave birth to a daughter.
  • Saleh and Ewan's Ending - Saleh and Ewan returned to Caer Pelyn to study in peace. Ewan worked hard, and his power eventually grew to rival Saleh's. They continued their studies as equals and expanded their knowledge even more.

Support Conversation Summaries[edit]

Ewan is capable of having support conversations with the following five characters:

  • Amelia - In the first conversation, Ewan and Amelia meet each other, and Ewan offers to show her some magic. She is initially afraid of the magic being harmful, but Ewan uses harmless spells that he describes as magic used to make girls happy. He asks Amelia to show him some lance tricks sometime. Amelia is reluctant due to thinking it is boring but Ewan tells her it probably is not and even if it is, it can be made fun. Amelia ponders his words after he leaves and notes that it makes a good rule to live by. In the next conversation, Ewan scares her and says it is his way of making their meeting a little more fun. She then shows him her lancework, and Ewan is impressed, and says he likes her outfit as well. He denies teasing her and asks her about her style but then also points out a stain on her armor. In the final conversation, Ewan asks her what places she has been to, which leads Amelia to realize she had never left Grado prior to the war. Ewan goes on to describe all the places he traveled with Saleh and offers to show her all of the places he has been to, describing them poetically. Amelia agrees to this, telling him that he fills her with energy, and they then decide to put an end to the war as soon as possible so that they could take their trip.
  • Dozla - Dozla and Ewan meet each other, with Dozla immediately noticing Ewan's energetic nature. Ewan tells Dozla about an idea he has to fill battlegrounds with plants to make them more colorful and beautiful, which would increase the army's morale. However, he has no idea how to go about this, and he does not want to use his magic to help because then his magic would overshadow the effect of the plants. Dozla remains supportive of Ewan and tells him the value of youth's dreams. Ewan is excited by this and he decides to start referring to him as Uncle Dozla. In the next conversation, Ewan is in high spirits as always, although Dozla is a bit tired from all the walking he has to do and wishes there was an easier way to move around. Ewan uses this as a clean transition to his latest idea. He mentions coaches, which the group has only one of, but Dozla goes over the disadvantages such as all the terrain that coaches cannot cross. Ewan tells Dozla that his plan is actually for a flying coach, although this is another idea that he really does not know how to pull off. He notes that pegasii would probably be too selective to pull these coaches, but he and Dozla still go over the advantages that would come from such a transport. In the final conversation, Ewan tells Dozla about his latest idea, which is for a type of long-distance communication. He knows of some magical devices with such capabilities, but he wishes there was a way for all people to communicate with each other instantly (basically describing the concept of the telephone). Dozla has trouble wrapping his head around the idea, and Ewan tells him that he uses to get in trouble for his outlandish ideas. Dozla remains supportive and tells him that most great ideas seem outlandish at first. Ewan is glad that Dozla has time to listen to him, and Dozla tells him that he can tell he will grow into an interesting man and that he looks forward to the day that one of his ideas becomes reality. Ewan says he can oddly almost imagine a world like that. Dozla decides he must remain alive for that day, and Ewan reminds him he will have to remain his friend as well.
  • Ross - Ross meets Ewan due to being around the same age and suggests that they hang out sometime, although Ewan says they should hang out right now despite the battle because they are not necessary at the moment. After comparing their skills, Ewan challenges Ross to a brainteaser involving pebbles and a balance which serves to confuse Ross, but he vows to solve it it. In the next conversation, Ross answers wrongly again, at which point Ewan points out the correct answer and explains it, although Ross does not seem to fully digest the long-winded explanation. Ewan than laughs at him and suggests that they hang out more often, although Ross is not so eager do to having not had any fun. In the last conversation Ross points out that his brainteaser was not fun and says he must have had a bad childhood if he considered that fun, which caused Ewan to reveal his past as an orphan. Ross begins to feel bad, but Ewan says he is still happy because of all the friends he has made since being abandoned. Ross then suggests that they becomes brothers so they could rely on and trust each other completely. Ewan goes along with this and asks Ross if he has a girlfriend, which he denies saying that he has to focus on the war. Posing the same question to Ewan, Ewan claims to have many girlfriends which surprises Ross but he then admits that since he is young it is probably best for him to not be tied down. Ewan then assures Ross that they will be friends for a long time.
  • Saleh - In the first conversation, Ewan comes across Saleh while he is practicing Valega and wants to try it as well. He quickly recants this when Saleh points out his impatience, and he asks for something closer to his skill level, then proceeds to reminisce about the early days of his tutelage, including one time when he had exhausted himself enough to sleep for two days, and Saleh carried him to his home. Ewan thanks him for this, but Saleh only wants Ewan to not push himself too far. In the next conversation, Ewan reminds Saleh of how they first met and asks him why he decided to train him in the first place. Saleh tells him because he saw a talent for magic in his eyes and assures him that his power will grow as his training progresses. Ewan tells him how intimidating he seemed at first due to his silence, but Saleh then tries to teach Ewan the importance of using one's heart to communicate without words. They then recall times when Ewan got in trouble with Saleh. Saleh calls him his most troublesome student, but Ewan promises to be more careful in the future. In the final conversation, Saleh instructs him to take all of his scrolls and magical items for his own if anything happened to him, as he was concerned that he would not survive the war. He also wanted her to watch over Dara and Caer Pelyn. Ewan doubts that this would happen and that he would be capable of living up to those wishes, but Saleh tell him that he will surpass him one day depending on his own efforts. This motivates Ewan to vow to protect Saleh in battle, saying that the two of them could get through anything if they combined their power. Saleh is impressed by how dependable Ewan has become and decides to use the war to teach him every last bit of magic that he knows.
  • Tethys - The first conversation starts with Ewan wanting Tethys to check out his magic, but she is annoyed that he is misbehaving and considers him too young to do things on the battlefield. Ewan assures her that even though he is not yet a full-fledged mage, he will grow into being one of the best mages ever. He then runs off, with Tethys reflecting that his boasts only made him look more childish. In the next conversation, Ewan approaches Tethys and wonders why she has been getting friendly with a lot of the men in the army lately. She begins to muse about this, but she then changes the topic when she realizes that Ewan is jealous, and she suspects that he is the cause of some random pranks that had been pulled on the men. Ewan initially denies it, but then he says it is because they are braggarts and jerks who deserved it. Tethys agrees to keep his secret but requests that he stop. Ewan complies, and then he tells her that he will always be there to protect her and that he was not too young for that. He also asked her to dance for him once in a while, certain that it would make him stronger. In the last conversation, Ewan suggests that she is dancing too close to the front lines, and she thanks him for worrying about him and then teases him by asking if it was just the jealousy talking. Tethys tells Ewan that he has grown stronger and is no longer a novice, which makes her glad and a little sad. She tells him that she is so much older than him that she always thought of him as a child and thus always thought she had to protect him. Ewan tells her that he did treat this as a game at first until he saw the dangers that Tethys faced to help everyone, and he then he knew he had to get serious and boost his powers. He hopes to return the favor for all the time that she had protected him, since he is now the man of the family. Tethys tells him that he does not need to rush off on his own and that she would be sad if he did not need her anymore. Ewan assures her that no matter how old he gets, she will always be his one and only big sister.
