Croco is a reptilian tophat-wearing theif who appeared as a recurring enemy and supporting character in Super Mario RPG: Legend of the Seven Stars and its Switch remake.

Background[edit]

Croco was a shrewd and swift thief who sought out easy marks to rob. He first appeared at the Mushroom Kingdom early in the game, where he had succeeded in stealing a Frog Coin from Mallow and easily outran him while retreating to Bandit's Way. There, Mallow pursued Croco with the help of Mario. After a long chase through Bandit's Way, Mario was able to corner Croco and forced him into a fight. After Croco was defeated, he surrendered his loot, which consisted of the Frog Coin and a wallet that he had stolen from a Toad.

He returned at the Mole Mines, where he was now accompanied by a trio of Crooks that he had met on Rose Way. There was a spring within the mines that would launch someone directly into the ceiling, and this knocked Mario out when he tried it. While Mario was unconscious, Croco stole his coins and fled Mario by running in a circle around that area of the mine while his flunkies hid. Mario was able to catch him and engaged him in another battle. For this battle, Croco would steal Mario's items mid-battle. After being defeated, Croco surrendered what he had stolen as well as one of the Microbombs that he had been using to blast open paths in the mine.

Afterwards, Croco never tried to engage Mario in battle again, but he made several other appearances in the game. At Nimbus Land, he tried stealing from a house while the owners were away. He fled upon seeing Mario, but he accidentally bumped into something on his way out and dropped his intended loot (the Signal Ring in the original game or the Echo Signal Ring in the remake). Afterwards, he made his way to Bowser's Keep, where he acted as a shopkeeper selling items and equipment to Mario and his friends. During the game's ending, he competing in the Mushroom Derby on Yo’ster Isle. After losing in a race against Yoshi, he walked off with fellow dino bully Boshi. He also appeared in the ending parade with one of his Sackits as they stole from the Bowser's Keep float and were chased by Bowser, until the loot was snatched by Booster's Snifsters, who they proceeded to chase after.

  • His name, which is the same in Japanese and English, seems to simply be derived from "crocodile".
  • According to an unseen NPC in Mushroom Kingdom, Croco wears crocodile-skin shoes despite his species, but this text was only in the English version of the game.
