Cormag is a playable unit from Fire Emblem: The Sacred Stones and is the game's first recruitable Wyvern Rider.

Background[edit]

Cormag and his older brother Glen were born into a family of poor farmers in Grado's countryside. Their lives changed one day when Emperor Vigarde's caravan was passing through the area, and the two brothers took it upon themselves to drive off a stray dog that was bothering the caravan by throwing rocks at it. Cormag and Glen were initially arrested due to accidentally hitting several soldiers as well, but this made Vigarde angry. He pardoned them and invited them to eat with him, despite them being dirty and lacking proper manners. Vigarde decided to test their capability with spears and so recruited them into Grado's army of wyvern knights. Cormag initially worked near the Renais border, but he eventually worked under his brother, who became one of Grado's generals.

During the War of the Stones, he was first seen in "Chapter 5: The Empire's Reach", where he accompanied Glen to Serafew in search of Eirika. Glen voiced some doubts to himself about Vigarde's recent behavior, but he did not repeat himself to Cormag. His story afterwards is different depending on the path chosen by the player. In Eirika's path, Glen had him remain at Grado's capital while he went off on orders to destroy Eirika's forces, and Cormag briefly defended Glen when Valter insulted him. In "Chapter 13: Hamill Canyon", Valter returned with Glen's corpse and claimed that Eirika was responsible for his death. Cormag was enraged and flew to get revenge on Eirika while she was en route to Jehanna. But if Eirika actually spoke with him, he would realize that she really did not fight Glen at all and that Valter was truly responsible. Seeing everything that was wrong with Grado, he then volunteered to join with Eirika's forces.

In Ephraim's path, Cormag was instead deployed with Selena to fight Duessel, as he was considered a traitor in the eyes of the empire. Cormag was very reluctant to strike against Duessel due to all the good he had done for Grado. He focused on Ephraim's forces first, but if either Tana or Duessel spoke with him, he would notice their sincerity and switch sides to fight for Ephraim, as he believed that is what his brother would have wanted. In both paths, Cormag finally had a chance to face Valter in "Chapter 15: Scorched Sand", which allowed him to truly avenge Glen in Eirika's route. In Ephraim's route, Glen's death was only briefly mentioned, and Cormag was never seen clearly acknowledging it nor is it mentioned whether or not Valter caused it. Cormag still fought as part of Ephraim and Eirika's forces for the remainder of the War of the Stones in order to destroy everything that was corrupting Grado. Even after the war was over, he saw that Grado still had a long road to go down.

Possible Fates[edit]

Cormag has two different endings, depending on whether or not he reaches an A Rank Support with Tana.

  • Default Ending - Cormag returned to Grado and helped with its reconstruction. He then left to wander on his own. He eventually reappeared and rejoined the army as a common soldier instead of as a knight.
  • Tana and Cormag's Ending - Cormag returned to Grado and helped with its reconstruction. He then left to wander on his own. Tana spent years looking for him, eventually succeeding in finding him and recruiting him into Frelia's knights.

Support Conversation Summaries[edit]

Cormag is capable of having support conversations with five other characters:

  • Artur - Cormag finds Artur looking at his wyvern, and after they introduce each other Artur explains his fascination with wyverns. Cormag gives him permission to touch it while warning him of how much trouble it was to befriend his wyvern over the years, but he also assures Artur that the wyvern Genarog seems like him, probably sensing his fascination with it. In the next conversation, Artur decides to give Genarog his lucky amulet as a gift in order to become friends with it. Cormag has him place the amulet, made of star stone, in Genarog's saddle bag, and the wyvern licks Artur's hand as he does so. Cormag explains that it took him two years before Genarog would lick his hand, so they were getting along famously. Cormag believes that the wyvern likes Artur more than than the amulet and welcomes his offer to talk to Genarog again. In the final conversation, Cormag apologizes for the star-stone amulet having been destroyed in a recent battle, although it wound up saving their lives by blocking an arrow that could have been fatal to both Cormag and Genarog. To thank him, Cormag humbly presents Artur with an unidentified stone that Generog found. Artur recognizes it as a wyvern stone, which enhances magical powers, and he is flabbergasted. It is a dream come true for him, and he then asks Cormag about his own dream. Cormag explains his dream is simply to undo the damage Grado has done and to make it a peaceful nation again, ruled by a gentle man. Artur is sure his dream will come true because they are all fighting to make that vision a reality, and Artur promises to do his part to ensure that. Cormag then asks Artur to visit him if peace does wind up being restored and offers to let him ride Genarog.
  • Duessel - The first conversation begins when Duessel approaches Cormag and asks him if he is well, being concerned for his heart rather than his flesh. Duessel points out that he made the decision to leave Grado and even though his own heart is not at ease, he has found something to believe in and fight for, but he is concerned that Cormag has not found the same. Cormag assures Duessel that he also made a choice to be here and believes in himself, and that his brother would understand. He also todl Duessel that since he was also in the army, there was no shame to be fighting alongside him. In the next conversation, Duessel is impressed by Cormag's skills, and Cormag asks to see his treasured lance. He recognizes it as the work of Galaveus, and Duessel is pleased to see he knows of him. He has a collection of Gavaleus's finest works, but this lance is his most beautiful, so he never dulls it with dirt or battle and is actually saving it to only use during his finest hour. Cormag is sure that he will never be Duessel's equal, and Duessel then tells Cormag that Glen had also asked to see the lance and made similar comments. Duessel assures Cormag that he will be his brother's equal. In the final conversation, Duessel shows him the cursed lance that has been in his family for generations, which he was supposed to carry without wielding. Duessel tells Cormag about the time that Valter grabbed used the lance, which drove him mad. Cormag then asks for the lance, as he feels that the lance only needs someone to master it. He assures Duessel that he has not been seduced by the weapon but instead could use it for the purpose for which it was forged. Duessel tells Cormag that he has no son to pass on this legacy to, and so he decides to entrust the lance to him in hopes that he could truly use it righteously someday. Cormag acknowledges the possibility that he could become another Valter, but Duessel has faith in him, and Cormag asks him not to get himself killed before that time comes.
  • Natasha - Cormag urgently approaches Natasha and asks her to heal a wounded kitten. She is surprised by this request and goes through with it, and Cormag is himself surprised by her describing him as "sweet". He then leaves, telling her he owes her one. In the next conversation, Cormag talks with Natasha after having returned the kitten to its mother and asks Natasha about her parents. She tells him that she has not seen them since she joined the clerical order and has grown to worry about them. Cormag asks more about her background and assures her that she has nothing to worry about due to border towns being quiet and safe aside from bandits, which cheers her up. In the final conversation, a depressed Natasha asks Cormag how he feels about having to fight their own countrymen all the time as well as the fact that Grado was responsible for this whole mess. Cormag partially attributes their circumstances to the sad irony of war and that it is good that they are trying to bring Grado to its senses. He also assures her that she has no reason to be ashamed of being from Grado because it once was a magnificent country, and they could help it to become so again. This lifts the fog from Natasha's heart, and he is glad to see her smile again. Cormag sees that they have a lot to talk about, and they promise to do so again.
  • Seth - Cormag observes Seth's skill, and Seth goes on to introduce himself, but both profess to having already heard of the other. Seth tells him that he and his brother were famous among the Knights of Renais due to Renais's lack of wyvern stories, which lead to stories of them becoming favorites among his men. Seth tells Cormag that he would love a chance to spar with him. Cormag does not think he can stand up to Seth, but Seth sees that Cormag will never accept failure, so they agree to spar once things have eased up. In the next conversation, Seth asks Cormag about his family due to wondering if they were all soldiers because of his skill. However, Cormag tells him about his "dirt-poor" agricultural background prior to being discovered by the emperor. Seth notes that they have opposing backgrounds but have the same loyalties. Cormag then points out Fado's death and how his emperor being responsible has led him to disown him, but Seth tells Cormag that he has found a new lord and assures Cormag that he will find a ruler worthy of his loyalties as well. In the final conversation, he offers Cormag a post among the Knights of Renais due to observing his skill as well as his strength and nobility. However, Cormag turns it down due to Grado being his home and Emperor Vigarde being his lord, as his only duty now was to correct Vigarde's mistakes. Seth claims he predicted this response and they both are glad to meet each other. They then endeavor to end the war and then get together to tell stories.
  • Tana - They meet up, and Cormag asks her not to refer to him using honorifics, saying that he did not know she was a princess at first. She suggests working together to avoid archers due to their steeds' mutual vulnerability to arrows as a type of buddy system. She points out how hard it would be for their voices to carry out while in the air, so they agree to have their steeds cry as signals. In the second conversation, Tana thanks Cormag for warning her of an archer the other day, but he explains that the wyvern had warned her independently before he had noticed. They talk about the close bonds which wyverns and pegasii form with their riders and mourn the toll that the war was taking on such creatures. This leads Cormag to reflect on the absurdity of war, and after Tana expressed her desire for everyone to live, Cormag pointed out that soldiers like him were pointless next to the regal people like Tana. Tana refused to accept this and made Corma promise not to throw his life away. In the final conversation, Tana asks Cormag what he is fighting for, because she saw him fighting earlier, and it made her sad. Cormag reviews various potential reasons why a man would fight but ultimately admits that he does not know what he is fighting for anymore. She asks what he plans to do after the war, and Cormag intends to help rebuild Grado but does not know what to do beyond that. Tana suggests that he come to Frelia as an airborne knight and explains that he is no longer considered a traitor as he is someone who is loyal to his beliefs to the point where it has made him sad. Cormag turns the offer down because he will not reforge his oaths, and he muses working in a woodshop instead. Tana promises she will ask him again there if so. Cormag notices how unusually strong willed she is and decided to think her offer over.
