Bowyer is a boss character from Super Mario RPG: Legend of the Seven Stars who was the second Smithy Gang member to be encountered within the game and was battled for the second Star Piece.

Background[edit]

Bowyer was created by Smithy within his factory in the Weapon World, with a bow-shaped body that was optimal for firing arrows. Once the Smithy Gang began invading Mario's world, Bowyer ended up in the Forest Maze along with his arrow-shaped followers, the Aeros. From there, Bowyer let loose with firing long-distance arrows to freeze various inhabitants of the neighboring Rose Town in place. He delighted in the suffering that his arrow caused and continued to fire more while counting them.

When he was first seen in Super Mario RPG, his Aeros brought him a Star Piece they had found, but he knew nothing about the object and was dismissive of it. Regardless, Geno came to challenge him in order to retrieve the Star Piece, and he was soon joined in battle by Mario and Mallow. Bowyer was overpowered and destroyed in battle against the newly-formed trio. In the remake, they specifically finished him off with their Triple Move, Star Riders.

In the last part of the game, it was shown that stronger, monochrome Machine Made clones of Bowyer were still manufactured in the assembly lines of Smithy's Factory. Bowyer was also seen accompanying Claymorton and Speardovich during the game's ending parade, and the three of them were bonked by Smithy's hammer.

Abilities[edit]

  • HP: 720, Attack: 50, Defense: 40, Magic Attack: 30, Magic Defense: 35
    • Thought Peek: "What's with these folks?" / "What's with these folks? Dressed funny, they are, nya. Furious it makes me, nya!"

As mentioned above, Bowyer was like a living bow and most of his attacks revolved around firing arrows. His arrows could paralyze others or simply do damage. In the boss battle, a series of buttons representing the buttons on the Super NES controller were present. Bowyer would fire arrows into each button, which would temporarily disable that button and its associated actions for the player. Bowyer could also use magic attacks such as Static E!, Lightning Orb, Bolt and the sleep-inducing G'nite. In the remake, Bowyer would try disabling all buttons at once at the end of the battle, which would prompt the Mario, Mallow and Geno to use their Triple Move instead.

Trivia[edit]

  • A bowyer is someone who makes bows, and his original Japanese name is Yuminpa ("Yumi" being Japanese for bow).
  • In the original Super NES release, Bowyer's eyes were depicted as red in the official artwork. They are actually blue in the game, although his Machine Made copies did have red eyes. His artwork for the Switch remake correctly depicts him with blue eyes instead.
  • He tends to speak in a manner where he says the predicate of the sentence first followed by the subject, a style of speech popularly associated with the Star Wars character Yoda.
