Unown is a mysterious and ancient Pokémon introduced in the second generation games. They come in 28 different forms that are based on figures of the alphabet as well as some punctuation marks.

Information

It is an ancient Pokémon that resembles ancient hieroglyphics. It has caused debate about which has come first, the Unown or the ancient writings. They have thin, flat bodies and are often found on walls. They are also believed to communicate with each other telepathically. It is said that alone they do nothing, but they release strange power when two or more are together. Because there are various different types of Unown, it is believed that they have a variety of abilities.

Unown were originally believed to have twenty-six forms in the second generation games, and each form resembled a character from the English alphabet. The third generation introduced two new forms, which resembled the punctuation marks "!" and "?". These different types of Unown could be documented once captured in the second generation's Unown Dex or HeartGold/SoulSilver's Unown Notebook.

Mainstream Games

In Gold, Silver, Crystal, HeartGold and SoulSilver, Unown appeared in the underground portion of the Ruins of Alph after the player completes the puzzles in the ruins, which apparently act as a signal for them. In FireRed and LeafGreen, Unown could be found in the seven Tanoby Chambers, with different types of Unown being found in each chamber.

In Diamond, Pearl and Platinum, Unown were found in certain rooms of the Solaceon Ruins; throughout the ruins there are rooms containing one type of Unown each which together spell out "FRIEND", while another room has the remaining alphabetic Unown. and lastly the two punctuation Unown appeared in the Ruin Maniac's tunnel to the ruins, which was only completed when the player caught the other Unown.

Other Games

In Pokémon Trozei!, G Unown were found at the Phobosphere, N were found at Endless Level 48 and Forever Level 48, Y were found at Endless Level 83 and Forever Level 83, and multiple forms could be found at Mr. Who's Den. In Pokémon Mystery Dungeon: Red and Blue Rescue Teams, Unown appeared at the Unown Relic, where there are different forms found on each floor. In Pokémon Mystery Dungeon: Explorers of Darkness and Time, they appeared at the Aegis Cave.

Video Games

• In the Super Smash Bros. series, the Unown primarily appeared in Super Smash Bros. Melee as one of the Pokémon that could be summoned at random from the Poké Ball item. When summoned, various Unown would attack in a swarm that flew across the screen and was difficult to avoid.. Several speedy Unown floats also appeared among the floats in the Poké Floats level. Unown's appearance in Melee was also accompanied by a trophy, and the Unown also appeared as a Novice-rank Support Spirit (which boosted PSI resistance) in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate. When fought against in a Spirit battle, Unown's Spirit would possess a team of eight tiny Mr. Game & Watch duplicates.

Other Media

• Unown were featured in the third Pokémon anime movie as the antagonists, and they were shown to reside in their own dimension. They appeared to the young girl Molly (whose parents had been lost in their dimension) and began granting all her wishes, including creating an Entei to act as her father and making Delia Ketchum into her new mother. As Ash and his friends challenge the, the Unown eventually go out of control and try sealing everyone within the mansion, but they retreated after Entei sacrificed itself. Unown since appeared in several episodes of the anime, such as one Johto episode where Ash's group helped to protect a lost Unown from Team Rocket, and a Sinnoh episode where they appeared at Solaceon Ruins.
• In the Pokémon Adventures manga, they were introduced in a Gold/Silver arc chapter where Gold accidentally awakened them with Flash while exploring the Ruins of Alph. A later chapter of the arc featured Bugsy exploring the Ruins and capturing one. The Tanoby Unown were briefly shown during the FireRed/LeafGreen arc, were Sird released them to distract the trainers, and Team Rocket later used them as living cameras. A Diamond/Pearl arc chapter also featured two Unown that were the first letters of Diamond and Pearl's name, and even had some of their traits.

• Its name is simply a play on "unknown".
• Unown are shown to generate their own radio signal that can be head on the Pokégear at the Ruins of Alph.
