Starmie is a mysterious star-shaped Pokémon that was introduced in the first generation games. It is the evolve form of Staryu.

Information

Starmie evolves from a Staryu that has been exposed to a Water Stone. Like Staryu, it has a red center section known as the core (and presumably retains Staryu's regenerative properties). This core also glows with the seven colors of the rainbow, and Starmie is believed to communicate with its glowing. It was given the nickname "the gem of the sea" due to its luminosity, and this has caused some to seek its core as a gem. It swims by spinning its star-shaped body in the manner of a ship's propeller.

Starmie's core also sends mysterious radio signals or electric waves to the night sky. Its body also grows into a symmetrical geometric shape regardless of the environment. This has caused speculation that Starmie is actually of extraterrestrial origin. Ancient people actually believed that Starmie were transformed from reflections of the stars that twinkled on ocean waves at night.

Mainstream Games

It cannot be found in the wild in most game and usually can only be obtained by evolving a Staryu. In Pokémon: Black and White Versions, they uncommonly appear when surfing in rippling water at Route 13.

Other Games

Starmie can be photographed at the Valley in Pokémon Snap. In Pokémon Pinball, Pokémon Pinball: Ruby & Sapphire and Pokémon Mystery Dungeon: Red and Blue Rescue Teams, Starmie can only be obtained through evolution. In Pokémon XD: Gale of Darkness, a Shadow Starmie could be snagged from Cipher Admin Snattle at Citadark Isle, and after being purified it could be traded to any of the third generation color versions. In Pokémon Channel, it appeared within the Secret Cove.

In Pokémon Trozei!, Starmie appeared at Secret Storage 13 and Mr. Who's Den. In Pokémon Ranger, it appeared at Safra Sea. In Pokémon Mystery Dungeon: Explorers of Time and Darkness, Starmie could be recruited at the first twenty basement floors of Surrounded Sea, the first eighteen basement floors of Miracle Sea, the first four basement floors of Deep Miracle Sea and the first forty-nine basement floors of Bottomless Sea. In Pokémon Ranger: Shadows of Almia, it was found at the Sea of Wailord. Starmie also appeared in Pokémon Rumble at Bright Beach.

Other Appearances

Video Games

• Starmie appeared in Super Smash Bros. as one of the Pokémon that could be summoned at random from the Poké Ball item. It floated in the air and shot a stream of stars that seemed to represent the Swift attack. Starmie was replaced by Staryu in the following games.

Other Media

• In the Pokémon anime, Starmie was featured as one of Misty's main Pokémon. However, it was not used that often, especially in comparison with Misty's Staryu.
• In the Pokémon Adventures manga, Misty was shown to own a Starmie that she used to defeat Red's Bulbasaur in battle with ease. Her Starmie could also communicate with other Pokémon and write messages in the air in an ancient language which Misty could understand.

Trivia

• Its name is a combination of "star" and "me", complementing Staryu's name referring to "you".
