Slowbro is a shell-tailed Pokémon that was introduced in the first generation Pokémon games. It is the evolved form of Slowpoke, although Slowking was later introduced as an alternate evolved form.
Information[edit]
Slowbro evolves from Slowpoke at Level 37. The evolution is apparently triggered by a Shellder biting onto its tail, and the Shellder is transformed by this process. They have a symbiotic relationship in which the Shellder feeds on the Slowbro's scraps, and Slowbro becomes able to walk on its hind legs. The Shellder is also compelled to stay on the Slowpoke tail by its sweet flavor. Slowbro will apparently revert into a normal Slowpoke if the Shellder releases its grip, but this is never demonstrated in-game.
The Pokémon's dull wit is enhanced by Shellder's poison causing it to lose its ability to feel pain. They usually live lazily by the sea. However, the Shellder's presence renders the Slowbro unable to use its tail for fishing anymore, which leads it to reluctantly swim out and go hunting for itself. The Shellder will sometimes force Slowbro into inspiration by biting down on its tail.
Appearances[edit]
Mainstream Games[edit]
In Pokémon: Red and Blue Versions, Slowbro could be found at Seafoam Islands and by fishing with the Super Rod at Route 23 and Cerulean Cave. In Yellow, it also appeared at Seafoam Islands and could be found by surfing at Routes 12 and 13. In LeafGreen, Slowbro could be found both on ground and by surfing at Seafoam Islands and Cape Brink, by surfing only at Berry Forest and Cerulean Cave, and by fishing with the Super Rod at Cinnabar Island.
In Gold, Silver, Crystal, HeartGold and SoulSilver, Slowbro were found by surfing at Slowpoke Well. In HeartGold/SoulSilver, they could also be found by surfing at Seafoam Islands, and they appeared in the Safari Zone's Peak and Rocky Beach areas.
In Black and White, Slowbro could be rarely found at surfing spots in Abundant Shrine.
Other Games[edit]
In Pokémon Pinball as well as Pokémon Mystery Dungeon: Red and Blue Rescue Teams, Slowbro could only be obtained through evolution. Slowbro could be photographed at the Valley area in Pokémon Snap. In Pokémon Trozei!, Slowbro appeared at Secret Storage 18 and Mr. Who's Den.
In Pokémon Mystery Dungeon: Explorers of Time and Darkness, Slowbro could be recruited at the first twenty basement floors of Surrounded Sea, the first eighteen basement floors of Miracle Sea, the first four basement floors of Deep Miracle Sea and the first nineteen basement floors of Marine Resort. Slowbro also appeared in Pokémon Rumble at Rocky Cave.
Other Appearances[edit]
Video Games[edit]
- In Super Smash Bros. Melee, Slowbro made a cameo appearance among a group of Pokémon in the game's intro sequence.
Other Media[edit]
- One episode of the Pokémon anime series revolved around the questions surrounding Slowpoke evolution, and the Slowpoke was able to become a Slowbro by the episode's end. Slowbro has made several other mostly minor appearances throughout the series, including one instance where Prima was shown using one to calm Ash's Charizard.
- Within the Pokémon Adventures manga, Lorelei is shown using a Slowbro as part of her team in the Yellow arc. The manga expands upon a Slowbro's abilities by showing it having enhanced senses and being able to see in every direction due to the Shellder's own eyes which face the opposite direction as Slowbro.
Trivia[edit]
- Its name is a combination of "slow" (which harkens back to Slowpoke's name) and "bro" (a name that seems to reflect its casual nature).
