Kyogre is a water-controlling, behemoth-like legendary Pokémon from the third generation games that is featured as the mascot for Pokémon: Sapphire Version. It forms the primary legendary trio of the third generation with Groudon and Rayquaza.

Information

Kyogre is a large water Pokémon with according to mythology is the creator of the sea. It can control water and create heavy rains without any effort. It is believed that it used this power to expand the sea. Kyogre's powers are quite dangerous due to the tidal waves and torrential rains it causes. For years it had feuded with Groudon, which eventually led to both Pokémon going into a deep slumber after Rayquaza broke up their fight.

It is said to have gone to sleep in a large cavern, and indeed it is found resting in the Seafloor Cavern in both Sapphire and Emerald (it does not appear at all in Ruby); Team Aqua sought to awaken it and were able to do so with the Red Orb. However, Kyogre went wild and its powers threatened to cause more damage than Archie had anticipated. In Sapphire it had to be battled by Brendan/May in order to stop it, while in Emerald it battled Groudon until Rayquaza split up the two's battle once again, at which point Kyogre retreated to the Marine Cave.

Mainstream Games

In Sapphire, Kyogre must be battled during the game after it is awakened. It is found in the Cave of Origin and can only be battled once. In Emerald, Kyogre is optional and can be found in the Marine Cave after Rayquaza breaks up Groudon and Kyogre's battle.

Kyogre can also be caught in HeartGold. If the player brings the Blue Orb (given by Mr. Pokémon after the player has received both the National Pokédex and a Kanto starter from Professor Oak) to the Embedded Tower at Route 47, Kyogre will appear and can be battled.

Other Games

In Pokémon Pinball: Ruby & Sapphire, Kyogre can be caught on the Bonus Field in the Sapphire Field. In Pokémon Trozei!, it can be caught through Random Agent Cards or Mr. Who's Den. In Pokémon Mystery Dungeon, Kyogre can be found on the bottom floor of the Stormy Sea, being the area's boss and capable of being recruited the first time it is battled. In Pokémon Ranger, it can be found in the Safra Sea during a mission. Kyogre also appears as the boss of the Bottomless Sea in a Secret Wonder Mail Mission of Pokémon Mystery Dungeon: Explorers of Darkness and Time, where it guards the Anti-Monica.

Video Games

• In the Super Smash Bros. series, Kyogre has appeared in each game starting with Super Smash Bros. Brawl as one of the Pokémon that could summoned at random from the Poké Ball or Master Ball item. When summoned, Kyogre flies around the stage while squirting out a stream of water that pushes other fighters back without doing damage. Its primary use is pushing opponents off of the stage.
  • Kyogre has also been represented by a trophy and sticker in Brawl, a trophy in the 3DS/Wii U game and two stages of a Primary Spirit in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate. In Ultimate, the initial Spirit that can be obtained is an Advanced-rank Spirit of Kyogre, and at Level 99, it could be enhanced into a Ace-rank Spirit of Primarl Kyogre, which also strengthens water and ice resistance. When fought against in a Spirit battle, Kyogre's Spirit would possess a giant Squirtle and summon Kyogre from a Poké Ball for aid.

Other Media

• Kyogre was first featured in a two-part episode of the Pokémon anime, where Archie awakened it and went mad using it in a destructive rampage, until Archie was defeated and lost the orb as well as its control over Kyogre. Kyogre then became more docile and saved Ash before retreating to its slumber in the marine trench again. Kyogre also appears in the ninth Pokémon movie, where it is among the swarm of water Pokémon summoned by Manaphy and helps to destroy the villain's submarine with a Hyper Beam.
• Kyogre appears in the Pokémon Adventures manga where it is awakened by Team Aqua at the climax of the Ruby/Sapphire arc. Wattson, Winona and Flannery attempt to battle it until Team Aqua distracts them, and it later battles Groudon until Rayquaza drives them away. Later on in the Emerald arc, Archie uses a wish on Jirachi to create a giant artificial Kyogre, which is ultimately destroyed by the combined attacks of all the Pokédex trainers' starter Pokémon.

Trivia

• Its name is a combination of "kai" (which means ocean in Japanese) and orca, which is a type of dolphin. Additionally, "kaio" can mean king of the sea.
