Zoda is a pilot in the F-Zero series and the arch-nemesis of the Arrows.

Background

The leader of the Zolorkian Coalition from planet Uma-41, Zoda has been at the forefront of many attacks on Earth. It was his plan to set up a Zolorkian government on Earth and use the planet for refueling, mining, and gambling. He often came into conflict with Super Arrow, the defender of Earth. He is well known for his wild and erratic behavior which is caused by the special device on his head that pumps adrenaline and dopamine into his body.

At this time the F-Zero races were discontinued due to the Horrific Grand Finale and most of the racers went into the underground to keep the sport alive. The racers supported a strict code to adhere to F-Zero rules and regulations, despite the lack of any officials from the game. Zoda, who joined in the races during his scouting, was one of the underground racers to break this code.

Zoda modified his F-Zero machine beyond the F-Zero formula to give himself an unfair advantage over the other drivers. The result of this made the machine also unsafe so that one day when his machine overturned, two other racers were killed in the accident. The same day, Captain Falcon rounded up 26 of Zoda's men and turned them in for a bounty. Zoda was able to escape, but swore revenge on Captain Falcon and the Arrows. He plans to eliminate them in the Death Race.

His bonus movie in F-Zero GX is Arise Zoda II! Zoda's Road to World Domination?! where he creates his own version of Mr. EAD in his likeness, but it malfunctions and falls on him.

F-Zero GP Legend

In the anime-based games, Zoda's backstory is drastically different. In the year 2051 he was a criminal being chased by detective Rick Wheeler. He caused Rick Wheeler to be in a devastating accident that caused him to be put in stasis for 150 years. What became of Zoda afterwards is unknown, but he was later revived by Black Shadow as his second-in-command of the Dark Million.

Within the story of F-Zero GP Legend, Zoda initially captures Dr. Clash and then evades Captain Falcon and Rick's pursuit with the aid of a decoy. After escaping, he raced Black Shadow in an attempt to overthrow him and won, only to discover he had defeated a robot duplicate. He then challenged Lisa Brilliant to a race and offered to restore her memory if she won, but he then recanted on his deal and was attacked by Black Shadow. Zoda was then intent on defeating Rick and warmed up by defeating all of the machines at Fire Field.

Zoda then raced Rick Wheeler at Big Blue, sabotaging Rick by cutting his brakes, and depending on the story mode he either lost again to Rick and was taken away by Black Shadow, or he won and reveled in his victory until his machine burst into flames from damage he did not notice, and Black Shadow told him that whether he lived or died was his choice.

The Death Anchor was originally an interplanetary missile designed by the Galactic Space Federation. It was stolen and remodeled into a F-Zero machine by the secret society, Deathriddle. The missile was originally designed to be the ultimate weapon, for that reason it still has a self-destruct device inside. A fact that is unknown to Zoda.

Other Appearances

  • As mentioned above, Zoda makes frequent appearances in the F-Zero GP Legend anime as a minion of Black Shadow from Rick's past. It is later revealed that Black Shadow had originally created Zoda and sent him into the past to kill Rick so that he would never become the new Captain Falcon. Throughout the series he attempts to overthrow Black Shadow and takes on the more powerful form of Hyper Zoda after merging with Reactor Might. He was later seemingly killed after Black Shadow tossed him into the Dark Reactor, but in the epilogue he was shown to still be alive and continuing to race.

Trivia

  • Zoda appears as a trophy in Super Smash Bros. Brawl.
