'''Wobbuffet''' is a Pokémon introduced in the second generation that is known for its defensive abilities. It originally had no evolutionary line, until the third generation introduced its pre-evolved form [[Wynaut]].

=Information=

Wobbuffet evolves from Wynaut at Level 15 and can only give birth to Wynaut (as opposed to coming out of the egg as Wobbuffet) by being bred while holding Lax Incense. It hates light and shock, living quietly in the darkness and usually moving only at night. It has been said that this is to hide its dark tail, which is believed to hold some unknown secret. It is usually docile and is never the first to attack. 

When attacked, Wobbuffet inflates its body to prepare for a counterattack. It does nothing but endure attacks in battle and will not actually attack on its own. However, it is said to strike back ferociously if its tail is attacked and will usually try to take its foe down with it using Destiny Bond. When two or more Wobbuffet meet, they may try to compete in outdoing each others' endurance. This may lead to them competing in which can go the longest without food, which is a habit which trainers are cautioned to beware of.

In ''[[Pokémon: Gold and Silver Versions|Gold, Silver]]'', ''[[Pokémon: Crystal Version|Crystal]]'', ''[[Pokémon: HeartGold and SoulSilver Versions|HeartGold and SoulSilver]]'', Wobbuffet is uncommonly found in the Blackthorn City side of the Dark Cave. In ''Crystal'' it can also be won in the Goldenrod Game Corner for 1500 coins, while in ''HeartGold'' and ''SoulSilver'' it could also be found in the Safari Zone's Peak area at night. Wobbuffet could also be caught at the Noisy Forest route of the [[Pokéwalker]], from which it could be transferred to ''HeartGold''/''SoulSilver''.

In ''[[Pokémon: Ruby and Sapphire Versions|Ruby, Sapphire]]'' and ''[[Pokémon: Emerald Version|Emerald]]'', it is uncommonly found in the Safari Zone. In ''[[Pokémon: FireRed and LeafGreen Versions]]'', Wobbuffet rarely appeared at Cerulean Cave and Ruin Valley. In ''[[Pokémon: Diamond and Pearl Versions|Diamond, Pearl]]'' and ''[[Pokémon: Platinum Version|Platinum]]'', it can be caught at Lake Verity as well as Lake Valor using the Pokéradar, and in ''Diamond''/''Pearl'' it was also found at Lake Acuity.

In ''[[Pokémon Channel]]'', it is given as a present from [[Professor Oak]] and acts as the host of the Quiz Channel. Wobbuffet was featured in the [[e-Reader]] minigame "Watch out Wobbuffet!" in which the player had to control Wobbuffet in using Mirror Coat reflect electric attacks and Counter to reflect boulders, and Wobbuffet also appeared in a variation of the "Lifesaver" short. In ''[[Pokémon Pinball: Ruby & Sapphire]]'', it could be found in the Safari Zone on the Ruby Field. In ''[[Pokémon Trozei!]]'', it could be found at Endless Levels 12 and 16, Forever Level 61 and Mr. Who's Den.

In ''[[Pokémon Mystery Dungeon: Red and Blue Rescue Teams]]'' it could only be obtained by evolving Wynaut, while in ''[[Pokémon Mystery Dungeon: Explorers of Time and Darkness|Explorers of Time and Darkness]]'' it appeared on the first nineteen basement floors of Marine Resort. In the former games a non-playable Wobbuffet and Wynaut also appeared, and they sent the player character on a mission into Uproar Forest, then they remodeled the rescue base in return. The same Wobbuffet returns in ''[[Pokémon Mystery Dungeon: Explorers of Sky|Explorers of Sky]]'', where she is confirmed to be a woman and runs the Recycle Shop in Spinda Cafe with Wynaut. This Wobbuffet only says its name in the first game, while in ''Sky'' it only says, "That's right!" due to inconsistent translations. In ''[[Pokémon Ranger]]'' it was found at Panula Cave, while in ''[[Pokémon Ranger: Guardian Signs]]'' it was found in Mt. Latolato and the Dark Temple.

==Video Games==

*Wobbuffet appears in ''[[Super Smash Bros. Melee]]'' and ''[[Super Smash Bros. Brawl|Brawl]]'' as one of the Pokémon that can randomly be summoned from the [[Pokéball]] item. Wobbuffet stands in place but uses Counter to knock any attack that hits it back at the offending fighter (but the player who released it is unaffected). It also appears as a float in the Poké Floats are of ''Melee''. A trophy of Wobbuffet appears in both ''Melee'' and ''Brawl'' as well as a sticker in ''Brawl''.

==Other Media==

*In the Pokémon anime series, Wobbuffet was featured as one of [[Team Rocket]]'s main Pokémon after Jessie accidentally traded her [[Lickitung]] for it. It usually pops out independently to interrupt Team Rocket (and becomes part of their motto), but is shown to be useful in battle the few times Jessie actually uses it. It is incompetent in contests, however. Jessie later left the Wobbuffet at Team Rocket HQ prior to the Unova series. One episode of the Johto series had also featured a town where everyone owned a Wobbuffet.
*In the Pokémon Adventures manga, a Wobbuffet was shown as one of the Pokémon used by Crystal's mother.

=Trivia=

*Wobbuffet's name is derived from a combination of "wobble" (moving back and forth) and "buffet" (as in hit repeatedly). Its Japanese name is a pun which translates to "That's the way it is", which is accompanied by Wynaut's Japanese name meaning "Really?", which is a shtick that is often represented in other games and media (and often winds up lost in translation).
