Wario Land II is the second sequel to the original Wario Land, following Virtual Boy Wario Land. It introduced some new gameplay features that became staples of the Wario Land series.
Story
Captain Syrup has decided to get revenge on Wario for stealing her treasure in the first Wario Land. To do so, she has attacked his castle, flooding it and stealing all of his treasure. Wario now must find away to defeat Syrup again and regain his treasure.
Gameplay
The game features a unique gameplay twist in that Wario is invincible. He cannot "die" in the game. Instead, enemy attacks will usually either cause him to lose coins or transform into a new form. The game is divided into multiple chapters, which are further divided into stories. Many stories in the game had secret exits of some sort, which could be unlocked to find a new path through the game.
With this secret exit system, there were in total five different endings. As in the first Wario Land, there was also a hidden treasure in each level, and all the treasures (along with pieces of map found in minigames at the end of each level) contributed towards a 100 % score in the game (which would unlock new features).
Legacy
Wario's transformations, introduced in this game, became a staple of the Wario series even after Wario's invincibility was removed in Wario Land 4.
Sequels
Wario Land II was followed up by Wario Land 3, which retained most of the gameplay features from Wario Land II.
Rereleases
Just months after the game was initially released, a colorized version was released for the Gameboy Color. The Gameboy Color version was the only version of the game to be released in Japan.
