Trace Memory (known as Another Code: Two Memories in Japan and Europe, as well as all releases of the remake) is a point-and-click adventure game for the Nintendo DS that was released in 2005.

Story[edit]

On her thirteenth birthday, Ashley Mizuki Robins has received a letter from her father, who she believed to be dead, asking her to meet him on Blood Edward Island. This message comes with a special device called the DAS (DTS in the North American localization). Ashley travels to the island with her guardian, Jessica, who is her father's sister. Shortly after arrival, Jessica disappears, and Ashley begins exploring the island to find her. Her exploration brings her to the abandoned manor of the Edward family, where she meets a ghost. The ghost is a boy who has lost his memories and can only recall being known as 'D'. The two explore the mansion together and solve its puzzles in order to learn the mysteries regarding Ashley's father, Jessica's disappearance and D's past, many of which tie into the secrets of the Edward family.

Gameplay[edit]

The player controls Ashley moving through environments from a top-down perspective with the DS touchscreen or D-pad. As Ashley, the player explores areas and comes across puzzles to be solved. Some of them utilize DS features such as the microphone. The player also has access to features such as a map and a camera that can help with exploration and puzzles. The camera and some of the menu features are presented through the DAS/DTS device. As the player progresses, Ashley will also accumulate items in her inventory, which can be utilized to solve puzzles and/or unlock other areas.

Version Differences[edit]

The North American and European releases of the game were translated and localized separately, resulting in two different versions of the game's script. The European script appears to adhere more closely to the original Japanese script, including retaining the original title of Another Code: Ywo Memories and accordingly using the terms of Another and DAS in the game, while the North American script replaced those terms with Trace and DTS, reflecting the title change to Trace Memory. The North American script also added an extra 'b' to Ashley's surname (making it 'Robbins') while taking more liberties with the script including more humor and changing Ashley:s personality to more snarky and skeptical.

Legacy[edit]

Ports/Remakes[edit]

  • In 2024, this game and its sequel were remade and released together as Another Code Recollection. This remake used only the original title of Another Code: Two Memories of the game, and the games were completely remade with new graphics and voice acting, as well as quality-of-life features.

Sequels[edit]

It was followed by Another Code: R - Journey Into Lost Memories, which was released for the Nintendo Wii in 2009. It was released in Japan and Europe, but not North America.
