Torterra is a large and powerful foliage-covered tortoise-like Pokémon that was introduced in the fourth generation games. It is the third and final form in Turtwig's evolutionary line.

Torterra evolves from Grotle at Level 32. It is a large Pokémon and has a shell that presumably is still made of soil, with a small tree growing atop it. Ancient people believed that a giant Torterra lived beneath the ground, implying that the entire Earth could have just been its back. When groups of Torterra migrate in search of water, they have been confused with "moving forests". Small Pokémon sometimes gather on one's unmoving back to build their nests. In fact, some Pokémon have been born on a Torterra's back and spend their entire lives there.

Torterra has not been found in the wild and can only be obtained by evolving a Grotle.

In Pokémon Mystery Dungeon: Explorers of Time and Darkness, it could be recruited at the Mystifying Forest and Mystery Jungle. In Pokémon Ranger: Shadows of Almia, it was found at Vien Forest. In Pokémon Ranger: Guardian Signs, Torterra could be captured (but would not join the player) at Rand's House. It could be caught at Silent Forest in Pokémon Rumble. Torterra also appeared in PokéPark Wii: Pikachu's Adventure at the Meadow Zone.

*In the Pokémon anime, Torterra was first shown belonging to a trainer in the tenth Pokémon movie. During the Sinnoh series, a Torterra was first shown as one of Paul's Pokémon and turned out to have evolved from the Turtwig that he had received as his starter Pokémon. It was one of his stronger Pokémon but was also kinder, as it secretly met with Ash's Grotle to give it tips on how to deal with the drawbacks that had come from its recent evolution. However, Paul later left it with most of his other Pokémon at his brother Reggie's. Ash's Grotle later evolved into Torterra while fighting Team Rocket at Sunyshore City. Torterra remained on Ash's team for the rest of the Sinnoh series and showed great battle prowess but often lost to more powerful opponents, and he left it at Professor Oak's with the rest of his Sinnoh team before leaving to Unova.

*In the Pokémon Adventures manga, Diamond's Grotle evolved into Torterra at Veilstone City while fighting members of Team Galactic during the Diamond/Pearl arc. It has remained as one of Diamond's main Pokémon since, and Platina was able to use it effectively during her gym battle against Crasher Wake. Diamond later taught it a unique varient of Razor Leaf that was both extremely fast and accurate to compensate for Torterra's low speed.

Trivia
*Its name is a combination of "tortoise" and "terra" (which is Latin for "earth").

*Torterra seems to be based on the legend of the world turtle (especially due to the similar legend mention in one of its Pokédex entries) which was said to carry the world on its back. It could also be inspired by Xuan Wu, the Black Tortoise from Chinese legends.
