Thoreau is one of the partners in Super Paper Mario, found in Chapter 1-2: Afoot in the Foothills.  He is a hand-shaped Pixl that allows Mario and co. to pick up and throw enemies, similar to the gameplay in Super Mario Bros. 2.  However, picking up spiked or certain other enemies will cause damage instead.  Thoreau can also trigger switches or grab items that would otherwise be unreachable. Except for Tippi, Thoreau is the only Pixl who talks after being found, when he says, "Looks like Fracktail is charging in from the right. You'd better flip again."

Mario and Tippi discover Thoreau locked in a chest in the basement of a house in Yold Town.  With his help they are able to leave the basement and convince Old Man Watchitt that Mario is the legendary hero.  Watchitt then allows the group to continue into the Yold Desert.
