Debut The Legend of Zelda

The second most popular of Nintendo's game franchises, The Legend of Zelda doesn't have nearly as many games as the Mario series. Despite this, each game has been of good quality.

History

The franchise was first started by Shigeru Miyamoto. The game was inspired by the summers he spent exploring the countryside around his home. Especially influential was a series of caves he found.

The most influential game in the series was the first, The Legend of Zelda. The game, while it had action, was mostly about exploration. The player is given very little direction about where to go and has to figure it out himself. The game introduced Link, Zelda, Ganon, and the triforce, among other things.

Second only to the original in influence is The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time. This was the first 3D incarnation of the game. Many of the characters introduced in this game, including Malon, Talon, and the Marathon Man, have appeared in newer Zelda games. This also introduced Link's horse, Epona, and his infamously annoying fairy, Navi.
