Although Sakurai had initially intended for ''Brawl'' to serve as the grand finale for the ''Super Smash Bros.'' series, he and Project Sora later worked with Nintendo in developing a pair of new installments that were created simultaneously for the [[Nintendo 3DS]] and [[Wii U]] in 2014. These installments were both simply titled ''[[Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS/Wii U|Super Smash Bros.]]''. They both featured the same roster of fighters and basic gameplay, but each game had some unique features and modes, in addition to featuring different stages. Although Sakurai had designed ''Brawl'' as the grand finale for the ''Smash Bros.'' series, Nintendo announced their intentions for Sakurai to continue making ''Smash Bros'' games for the next-generation consoles. The idea is to make a [[3DS]] game and a [[Wii U]] game which would possibly be capable of interacting. The idea of more third-party characters such as Mega Man have been brought up, but everything is still theoretical as Sakurai and [[Project Sora]] have not actually started the game yet.
