This game features Pokémon as living toys that are used for battles and features all of the Pokémon from the first and fourth generations, due to the latter being the most recent generation at the time. The player starts off with just a weak Rattata and must build their way up to get stronger Pokémon. In Adventure Mode, the player can explore several stages to recruit more Pokémon. There is also a Battle Royale mode which the player must compete against a large wave of Pokémon in a big battle. Coins can also be collected, which are used to buy more attacks or recruit more Pokémon, and some Pokémon can only be unlocked with special passwords.

Pokémon Rumble has a strong multiplayer feature as well. There is a two-player co-op mode, and up to four players can also battle each other in a stadium battle.

Pokémon Rumble Blast was released in 2011 and unlike the original, it was a full-fledged 3DS game. It focused on the new Pokémon from Pokémon: Black and White Versions.
